osaraba: (inception arthur BAMF)
...would you guys be able to facilitate that?

I'm on the precipice here and all I need is a bit of a nudge. Pull me into your waiting arms, Inception fandom. I miss you bad; I want to squee like I used to, I want that rush of blood, that sensation of overwhelming ~feeling.

Do you have any epic recs for me, starting around oh, a little over a year ago?

I saw the TDK trailer last night when I went to see Spiderman and I practically swooned when I saw JGL. Yeah, you were probably thinking I was about to say T-Hard, but no, JGL totally made me think of Arthur when he says that line about Mal, to Ariadne, "She was lovely." And all of a sudden I couldn't wait for all the Inception/TDK crossover fic that I just KNOW is going to come out of this.

And then, I just started watching that show, Person of Interest and it made me think of Christopher Nolan. Ugh, I'm not even sure why! But then I started thinking about some of the recurring themes in his works, and I... I think I may have gotten myself interested in Inception fandom again, basically.

I also think that when Looper comes out I may have some intense desires for Inception/Brick/Looper crossover fic, which, ugh, I may end up writing drabbles for.

I'm going to be at San Diego Comic Con this year (for somewhere between one and four of the days, so if you're going to be there and want to grab lunch together or something let me know!), and I'm really really hoping I'll be able to go to the Looper panel. I have such a hard-on for Rian Johnson, IDEK.

The quick summary of my reaction to the Spiderman movie, btw, is: Eh. I was mostly bored/didn't feel much emotional connection to any of the characters, but the acting was darn awesome. Emma Stone stole the show, she and Andrew Garfield had amazing chemistry, and the best scene was that suuuuper adorable/awkward scene in the school hallway.
osaraba: (p!atd spencer shiiiiny)
So while LJ was indisposed I decided to pretend it didn't exist and pretty much ignored the situation altogether. It seems to be back (or close) to normal now, so here I am. I've been in this weird limbo of unemployed with lots of free time.... and somehow finding myself sort of busy. And ffs, spending too much time with my parents. I spent 10 hours with them yesterday, helping my father buy and set up an awesome new laptop. But. TEN HOURS. =/

Just saw this movie from 2007 called Shelter, which was just great. It's about a guy named Zack, an artist in the ghetto of some SoCal city, with a sister who's a big flake and a 5-year old nephew who has clearly hung the moon and all because Zack is holding the ladder steady beneath him. His best friend goes out of town for a while and his brother stays there, and he and Zack end up hanging out, surfing a lot, and falling for each other.

Of course there's more to it, but it's pretty typical and straightforward -- nothing happens that you couldn't see coming a mile away, but it's sweet, and it's just-- nice to see this sort of romance/drama with a gay couple. =D I recommend it if you're looking for an easy, pleasant way to spend an hour and a half. <3

So now is where I'm going to get all fannish and say I WANT THE SPENCER/BRENDON AU! FIC FOR THIS MOVIE! They're surfer dudes! In southern California! The artist (~musician?) angle with family troubles is ALREADY THERE! There's an adorable kid! What more do we need? And really, WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN WRITTEN ALREADY? =(

And so I leave you with this, one of my favorites from the 8/09 Chicago M&G, from what I refer to in my head as Surfer-era!Panic. <3

osaraba: (jgl corona drunk)
Ahahah, and after I said I wouldn't spam you guys....

But I'm planning on going to see Hesher tomorrow night at either the AMC 25 at Times Square (8:10pm) or the Angelika (7:45pm). Does anyone want to join me?

Please feel free to fwd the invitation to anyone trusted individuals who might be interested. =D

There have been SO many amazingly good fics lately just in general. I know I've said before how amazingly prolific and high-quality this fandom is. Well. This story by [livejournal.com profile] persephone_il just took my breath away. It's everything I love in existential published fiction, which I don't read very often because I don't really know where to look, or what authors to look for, and which I almost never come across in fanfic. That kind of dark, surreal, sort-of-horrific imagery that is so visceral and cutting. The sort of thing that matches so fucking perfectly with the plot and character-introspection that it all just mirrors itself but is so slick and smooth that it just slides right over you. Ugh, I have so many ~feelings~ about it that I can't articulate but I want to say more than the usual incoherent squee.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS. And if you feel even half of what I feel about it, leave her feedback.

However, please take heed of the warnings in case this is Not Your Thing.
Sustenance by [personal profile] the_ragnarok

Summary: AU. "Nobody in their business comes by their skills for free. There is always someone to train you, to remake you in the image of your chosen profession. Their world is a place of ownerships. The best you could hope for was a long, comfortable leash."
Contains: Body horror, oblique references to violence against children, sort-of-but-not-really cannibalism.

And if anyone reads this and has ANY recommendations for fic/books/movies/etc. that have a similar feel to this, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IMMEDIATELY. The thing that came to mind for me was eXistenZ, but I don't know if the movie actually really compares as I read the book based on the movie and it was less than stellar.

watching tron legacy right now. I want all the fic. ALL THE FIC. CROSSOVER WITH INCEPTION IN PARTICULAR. HEEEEE. (what, what gives you the idea that I'm still obsessed?)

YES MORE ASEXUAL!FIC by [livejournal.com profile] persephone_il. IT IS SO FREAKING GOOD, AND SO REAL, AND SO LOVELY. IT WINS ALL THE THINGS. EVER. And this time it's asexual!Eames! Which is surprising because it doesn't fit fanon!Eames who tends to be a sex god of sorts, but I think it makes just as much sense as asexual!Arthur. I mean, let's be realistic -- there's not a lot to work with in the canon (or conversely, there's a lot to work with because they don't really give us a lot of solid information about them).

We're making assumptions based on certain things, but so much of canon is based on, I don't know, extrapolation of physical attributes, I think? I said this at the Inception panel, and I'll say it again-- Eames is much quieter and introverted than Arthur is, really. He's always quietly sitting, observing. He fidgets, but it's in little ways. But we see Arthur interacting with more ease, and a more expressive/open face. But since he wears the sleeker suits, has his hair slicked back, clearly he's more... what, repressed? restrained? But he has such an open face!

I didn't actually mean to go on about this again; it was all said in the first month of fandom. but I suppose that when I think about these things too hard (which is not infrequently), I resign myself to the fact that fanon hivemind is and always will be utterly baffling! (If still highly entertaining.)

ETA: I just realized that that whole second paragraph could possibly be misinterpreted to mean that those are reasons why Eames is more believable as asexual than Arthur? And that's not what I meant at all. It was more about making assumptions as to characterisation and no sexual or asexual implications were intended.

In other news, I want to go see The King's Speech like burning! COLIN FIRTH. GEOFFREY RUSH. HELENA BONHAM CARTER. THIS IS ALL I REALLY NEEDED TO KNOW. But the actual plot of it sounds brilliant as well; I have a huge weakness for any situation which involves watching the protagonist learning/training to prepare for/overcome something (anyone have a convenient Trope Title for this?). I DON'T KNOW HOW I COULD POSSIBLY FIND THIS MOVIE WANTING IN ANY WAY. Why is it only a limited release? Only playing in two theaters in NYC next week. ...ahahah Jennifer Ehle is in this too. <3

osaraba: (laby sarah inabook)
Hey guys, in particular those of you who attended [livejournal.com profile] wincon -- I remember having an extended conversation with a whole bunch of you that last day, talking about YA novels and such, yes? This may or may not have been part of that conversation (I seem to think it was, but I'm not really sure), but I remember mentioning Sarah Monette's Melusine and one of your responses was something like, you didn't like it so much? I remember taking it as being put off with, I dunno, the style of writing? I'm not sure.

Anyway, I just finished the first book in that series did actually enjoy it to pieces, so now I'm really curious as to what the reason for being put-off was?

There are definitely some dark, triggery themes in this particular book (and maybe in the rest of the series as well?), but I remember having the impression that it was the style rather than the subject that was off-putting?

In any case, I'd love to hear thoughts by anyone who's read Melusine or any of Monette's other works. This is the first of her writing I've read.... I mean, other than her awesome due South episode analyses. =D

In other news, I also read Audrey Niffenegger's The Time-Traveler's Wife and DAMN THAT WAS GOOD. Oddly enough, I also remember hearing negative reactions to it... but now I wonder if it was toward the movie rather than the book? As usual, the movie didn't do the book justice. It also kind of solidified my negative opinion of Eric Bana. I mean, there were moments where I thought he was adorable, but that has more to do with his looks than his acting. His emotions just fall so flat. And I had just finished reading the book, which made me CRY FOR HOURS, NO FUCKING JOKE; my eyes were puffy for hours after I stopped. So I was willing to be emotional about the movie. SO WILLING. Sadly, I barely shed a tear-- and that was only because I was thinking about all that had led up to it in the book, rather than actually reacting to the movie. What a waste.

Please feel free to chime in on The Time-Traveler's Wife also!

So in direct contrast to my insanely obsessive and passionate love for THARRRD (see previous post), I have a slightly smaller, milder appreciation for JGL. Which is not to say I don't enjoy his varied and variable faces; his creativity and musical talent; his acting ability (which is not shoddy at all); his lovely voice (I am in full support of him going through life as a musical, constantly singing La Valse a Milles Temps through the streets of NYC, hopefully where I can hear him on my lunch hour, in a mix of French and English); his love of France (even though I am an anglophile and thus have a strong urge to dislike anything French); his silly hipster style.... but.

Well. It's actually all quite ironic and amusing (to me, at least), considering how I love Eames, but how much I lovvvvve Arthur. Which pains me to no end, NGL.

Erm, I went a bit off-topic there, actually. Oops.

I meant to talk about how I've enjoyed some of JGL's backlog but nothing really reached out and grabbed me. Mysterious Skin was interesting (and who doesn't appreciate the chance to see JGL's pert little backside and his orgasm face?), but nothing to write home about; 500 Days of Summer was supremely entertaining, lovely, and heartbreaking all in one, but not my usual type of fare; The Lookout was interesting as well (and I got to squee for a sec because JGL PLAYING HOCKEY = YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU).

But Brick I loved.

It's one of those movies where the style is different and deliberately so. It's one of those movies that you have a decided opinion of. Either way; you kind of love it or just don't get it. I can totally understand where some might watch it and be bored by it or just not be really engaged; they might think it tried too hard maybe? Or that it wasn't anything unusual. But oooh, I see it. I get it. The tone, the fast pacing of the dialogue, the give-and-take; almost as if the verbal exchanges were a dance; specific steps to be taken at specific beats and don't slow down, don't make even one misstep or it'll all be lost.

If I were a film student, I'd actually have references to make instead of feelings to go on.

There was a scene or two which some might say were overacted and a few more which some might say were underacted, but those scenes contributed to the tone; the odd, creepy, fast-yet-slow pace which just had me watching in fascination as it all unfolded.

And oddly, it was almost like Romeo + Juliet -- like period speech anachronistically thrust into modern day.

It had that quality about it. <3

AND NOW FOR THE SHALLOW: OMG JGL/BRENDAN WAS REALLY CUTE IN THIS WITH HIS WAVY/CURLY HAIR ALL IN HIS FACE AND HIS LITTLE SPECTACLES AND HIS HANDS CONSTANTLY STUFFED IN HIS JACKET POCKET WITH HIS BACK HUNCHED OVER. HE WAS JUST CONSTANTLY ADORABLE; THERE WAS NO SCENE IN WHICH HE WAS NOT ADORABLE. AND HOT. AND THE QUICKNESS OF HIS BRAIN WAS SUPER HOT. IN ADDITION, LAURA WAS HOT AND I HOPE HE GOT TO HIT THAT AND ALSO THEIR ALMOST-KISSING SCENES WERE REALLY HOT TOO.

...and as a side note, Lukas Haas was in it! (I practically lunged out of my seat when I saw him.) WTF, DO I HAVE TO START PLAYING 6-DEGREES OF INCEPTION NOW?!

(BTW, not apologizing for this one because it was actually less gratuitous than my last post.)

OMG SLEEP NOW.

ETA: Okay, yes, I'm dumb. A neo-noir film, with dialogue homage to Dashiell Hammett, author of The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man, among others.

JUST SAW THARRRD AND CHARLOTTE RILEY IN WUTHERING HEIGHTS. NNNNNGHHH THARRRD AS HEATHCLIFF WAS THE BEST IDEA EVARRRRR. OMG PLEASE DO NOT EVER STOP PLAYING TORTURED INSANE ROLES, THARRRD. <3 <3 <3

Part 1 of Alex Zane's interview of Tom Hardy on The Guest List

TWO FAVORITE LINES:
  1. "Do you want more?" (LSJlSLJKFSLDFSLFJ! TOM HARDY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO ASK SUCH A QUESTION IN SUCH A VOICE WITH SUCH AN ACCENT. IT DOES INDECENT THINGS TO ME.)

  2. "Not that Michael J. Fox doesn't, but Axel Foley seems to have... more... balls..."

Part 2 of Alex Zane's interview of Tom Hardy on The Guest List

FAVORITES OMG:
  1. "Me, Nick Nolte... a pair of pants... a cage."
    "Just one pair of pants?"
    *nods* "Just one."

  2. "Why did they put Australia so far away? It's unnecessary. You'd think with technology nowadays they could have moved it a little bit closer."

I love that he loves Beverly Hills Cop because I totally do, still, and was just earlier this week making references to it, LOL. And now I can't wait for the new Mad Max. It's much easier to be happy anticipating it than if it was Mel Gibson, that's for sure.
osaraba: (inception eames bangbangbang)
How have I never seen this? I think I need to start paying more attention to stuff that comes out of the UK. But, ugh, this means I have to make an effort?

So here's [livejournal.com profile] bookshop's reading and interpretation of the film.

http://bookshop.livejournal.com/1061263.html

SPOILERS WITHIN )

OKAY SERIOUSLY, DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS MOVIE?!

BONUS SEXY TIMES:

Possibly everyone reading this may have witnessed my Tom Hardy obsession explosion yesterday on Twitter? If not, you missed the chance to laugh at Sara's INCOHERENT CAPSLOCK FLAIL.... and also clearly delusional statements in which Sara asserts that Tom Hardy exists only to have her bite his face and tats. And Sara randomly talks in third person... What?

DUDES: TOM HARDY HAS DONE A COUPLE (this makes me extremely happy)
THIS PICTURE ALSO MAKES ME EXTREMELY HAPPY
osaraba: (inception ae dream bigger)
Currently obsessed with Inception, in case you hadn't noticed it's all over my twitter?

Should you be reading this, [livejournal.com profile] thebroodwich: Shut it.

Don't worry: NO SPOILERS HERE. (Some in comments, heed warnings.)

Have things to say about the two obvious names, several interpretations/perspectives on the story (in its own right as well as as-metaphor), and the meaning of the end scene. I'm going to see it again on Saturday (double feature, after Salt) with Liz, Raquel, Maryann and whoever else, and I will try to formulate some coherent thoughts that aren't just *squeeeee*.

Mostly I'm still going to be flailing over the ARTHUR + EAMES = OTP equation, as [livejournal.com profile] morganwolf so aptly put it earlier.

Also, I really need to dig out my DVDs so I can re-watch The Prestige.

Anyone who would like to squee and/or flail at me re: Inception is EXTREMELY welcome to. =D

ETA: This is a really good theory about the meaning of the end scene. I only wish I'd waited to read it until after I saw it a second (or more) time(s), dammit. /o\ DAMMITDAMMITDAMMIT.

ETA2: Another article I want to read, but this time will wait until I've seen it again.

ETA3: NY Mag interview with Dileep Rao re his thoughts on plot/answers/etc.

ETA4: List of various theories and bookshop's list of meta
osaraba: (welcome to the reality)
Please read [livejournal.com profile] bookshop's post about a fantasy book and why changing its cover is that sort of insidious institutionalized racism/bias that I hope people can work to become more aware of, and protest/counteract.

http://bookshop.livejournal.com/1056528.html

Oddly enough, it's almost exactly the same situation as what's going on with Avatar: The Last Airbender. Funny, that.

For a great post about the racism in Avatar, please read: http://splinterend.tumblr.com/post/749364670/facepainting

My birthday weekend was pretty darn awesome, I have to say. I haven't usually made a big deal of my birthday in past years, but I think this was one of the most satisfying birthdays in a while. \o/

Friday was game 3 of the Hawks v Sharks, which they won, and hanging with coworker friends afterwards.

Saturday was meeting up with friends at The Flying Puck to see the Flyers v Habs game, which the Flyers (who I was cheering for) won, and getting an amazing surprise when I checked my email that afternoon -- Maryann was up to her sneaky little email tricks and apparently encouraged a few friends to chip in on my Berlin travel fund.

YOU GUYS ROCK! *HUGS* and THANK YOU to those who contributed!!!! <3 <3 <3

After the game Liz and I went to the Fair to Midland/10 Years/Flyleaf concert. Remind me not to go to another 16+ show because the crowd is LAAAAME. Or maybe it's because Flyleaf sounds like hard rock but it's actually an emo girl band -- because there were way too many emo teenyrockers in the crowd. UGH.

10 Years and Fair to Midland recap )

During the Flyleaf portion of the show, Liz convinced me to go see The Losers since it was still playing at the AMC at Times Square. We went to see the midnight showing, with maybe 10 other people in the theater, and it was FABULOUS. I don't think I've seen a movie with just Liz in a long, long time -- and it was really nice. Not surprisingly, we're on the same wavelength for so many things, and we both found this movie to be SRSLY AMUSING! The plot isn't at all complex or deep, but it's a great movie for humor between characters. Tech Geek Guy with bullets-shoot-out-of-his-fingers! Super Powers, FOR THE WIN! (Not really; but if you've seen the movie, you should know that Liz and I could not stop laughing way after this scene was over.)

Sunday was a nice relaxing day; I went to feed a friend's birds as I usually do on the weekends, and stayed there to take advantage of her 60" HDTV to watch the Hawks v Sharks game 4. THE ONE IN WHICH THE HAWKS SWEPT THE SHARKS FOR THE WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS WIN! 60 inches' worth of the Toews-Kane-Buff line, and watching Duncs get a puck to the mouth and lose SEVEN TEETH, and get back on the ice several minutes later, and playing a total of TWENTY NINE MINUTES ON THE ICE?! Was fucking awesome.

I need me one of those.

...and Bur gets the icon because his face is simply amazing here. <3
osaraba: (hawks kaner yeah!)
Just purchased tickets to see Iron Man 2 tomorrow evening with Kpharrina, so if anyone is interested in joining us, you're welcome to come along. Link to tix: http://deke.me/y5. It's during Maryann's party, but I had made plans to hang with Kerina before Maryann's party was announced. =( Still, I'm sure Maryann knows how much I love her and how much I wish her a SUPER HAPPY SPEEESHUL BIRTHDAY! <3

In other news, since I'm NOT going to work conference in France this year, I am free for Acen! \o/ I was able to get Monday off, so it will be a nice bonus to have Monday free to hang with Juliet! (Maybe I'll actually make it into Chicago proper this time!) Monies for this flight will be reimbursed (since I'm working at Acen, not having fun or anything lame like that) and then go straight into Trip to Berlin Funds!
Saturday 05/15/10:
AA 309 LGA 8:35am → ORD 10:15am

Monday 05/17/10:
AA 346 ORD 7:55pm → LGA 11:05pm

The only thing that could make trip to Chicago better is if the Hawks make it into the Quarterfinals and Game 1 is that Sunday night (5/16).

ETA: Eljay is hoarding comments again, so if I don't respond in a timely matter it's not my fault!
osaraba: (hcl bj stares)
finished watching season 3 of slings & arrows about half an hour ago and had the strongest and most random urge to watch hard core logo again. and since I recently bought the DVD for like $6.50 from barnes and noble, I didn't even have to turn on my computer!

i started watching the hcl DVD and christ! the color is sooooo much better!!! I'm fucking DYING -- it's like a whole new fucking movie OMFG!!! \m/

I am actually able to see some details I haven't been able to previously, which is really just brilliant. so yeah, if you were wondering whether it's worth it to buy the DVD when it's just as easily accessible on your laptop? it is.

JFC, REALLY. I DON'T THINK I CAN TAKE THIS MOVIE BEING ANY BETTER THAN IT ALREADY WAS.

additional post probably tomorrow about s&a season 3.

Which I completely understand. Because I really really liked him back in the 80s when he was doing stuff with members of the Brat Pack.

Judy's boss told her she should watch Tuff Turf (1985), which has a young RDJ in it. And so Judy said we should try to dl it and watch it. And I'm like, "Sure! We should also dl and watch Less Than Zero (1987) because it has JAMES SPADER IN IT." Whom I love to death. And also because Less Than Zero HAS AWESOME IMPLIED SCENE OF RDJ BLOWING* SPADER IN EXCHANGE FOR COKE. YAAAAAAAYYYYYYY! I was thrilled with this at the tender young age of (probably not 6, which I was when the movie came out), but possibly in the 8-11 age range.

*Or possibly some other sex act, I can't quite remember anymore...

No, my tastes have not changed much since I was 5. Yes, I said 5.

Anyway, she sent me a link to the trailer for Tuff Turf:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3vw7o_tuff-turf-theatrical-trailer_shortfilms

Hahaha, you have to see it -- it's SO EIGHTIES OMG!

And guess what? JAMES SPADER IS THE MAIN CHARACTER! He plays the teenage-rebel anti-hero with a leather motorcycle jacket. YAYYY! The only thing better than badass-teen!Spader is asshole-coke-dealer!Spader, asshole-voyeur!Spader from Sex, Lies & Videotape (1989), and sweet-sadist-dom!Spader from Secretary (2002), which btw, is one of THE most romantic movies I've ever fucking seen. \o/
