I'm a little swamped at work, but I wanted to do rec a few things I've read recently.
[livejournal.com profile] yanethyrael's Only in the Storms, written for [livejournal.com profile] i_reversebang and [livejournal.com profile] fae_boleyn's art. I had the pleasure of betaing for the lovely [livejournal.com profile] yanethyrael and totally got caught up in the off-the-grid lives of Ariadne, Arthur and Eames. It's mostly gen, though there are hints of interest. Most significantly, I'm not really a fan of Ariadne in canon or fanon, but this Ariadne is pretty darn cool -- I actually like her. All three of them are interesting characters and my only complaint is that there isn't more! It feels like the start of a story, and I'm shamelessly demanding some sequel ficlets! Go forth and read, and don't forget to comment!

ION, I'm relatively new to the Merlin fandom so for the last month I've been feverishly reading ALL THE FIC. (There is no end in sight, just yet.) There have been SO MANY great, epic fic and I haven't been keeping track of them as well as I should be, but since I've got a moment just now, I'm reccing a few (all Arthur/Merlin):
  1. [archiveofourown.org profile]ardent's Break Like Time: The Fifth Column. JESUS FUCK. This is an epically and amazingly plotted canon-era AU which re-appropriates the events of the show and turns it all on its side while keeping the main themes and relationship dynamics intact. This reads like an epic fantasy, rife with secrets, betrayal, split loyalties, hidden plots, and well-timed revelations -- I don't even think the author would have to change names in order to get this published because it's just another take on the Arthurian legends (though clearly taking inspiration from the BBC show). 30k words AND YET IT IS ONLY THE FIRST ARC! I'm desperately hoping the author continues because reading this was satisfying in ways so much of the canon-era fic out there are not.

  2. [livejournal.com profile] seperis's Privileges of Rank (but really basically ALL of her Merlin fanfic) because her Arthur is my headcanon!Arthur. All the interaction he has with other characters is SO in character with the canon, and yet we get to see how he tries to hide his compassion and dedication to justice, and god, how much he cares. And the dialogue! Dialogue can be SO difficult to write -- it's absolutely the bane of my own attempts -- but she nails it. So basically, go read everything she's written. PoR in particular, though, has a touch of dark to it -- a nod to the power dynamics in the show; in a completely self-indulgent way, I wish there had been more, but what was included REALLY worked for the story itself.

  3. [livejournal.com profile] riventhorn's Knights of the Air, a ridiculously well-written, well-researched story about Arthur and Merlin as RAF pilots during World War II. The atmosphere of this was SO well done, I felt like I was watching a WWII movie. This was heartbreakingly lovely.

    ETA:
  4. Just read everything by [livejournal.com profile] syllic.

PLEASE, don't hesitate to rec some more Merlin fics to me -- I've been on a spree and I still can't get enough. I feel vaguely guilty as there are some Inception fic (WIPs and others) that I haven't kept up with, but I know I'll get back to them soon. Oddly enough I've gone back to listening to my Inception-related playlist full of french music from the 60s and random emo-rock (yeah, don't ask).
osaraba: (inception arthur pointman)
Inexplicably, I am an Arthur fangirl. I don't quite understand why, because not only am I way more a Tom Hardy fangirl, I also typically like characters with shady pasts and IMO canon!Eames is way shadier than Arthur. Still, what can I say, the cards have fallen this way. I wonder if that's because it's easier to imagine the different ways Eames got to where he is? I find I'm disappointed more often than not by Eames-backstory fic; they're either stereotypical or dissatisfying to my headcanon. Not that there aren't stereotypical Arthur-backstory fic, or uninspired ones for that matter, but I always seem to feel (at the very least), "Well, that's just one slice of the whole."

Clearly, the man fascinates me.

So tl;dr, I recommend to you two awesome Arthur-centric gen fic:
  1. Get Lost by [livejournal.com profile] winterlive. This is what happens: The morning after inception, Arthur hurls his phone into the Mojave Desert. Arthur drives across the country, revisiting old friends and old memories. We get to ride, silently and invisible, in the passenger seat along with his thoughts. I could've gone on forever in this, savoring it all: every memory, every interaction, every visit was so sharp and vivid, delightful and painful all at once.

  2. A Source of Little Visible Delight, Parts 1, 2, 3 (complete) by [livejournal.com profile] sneaqui. Arthur takes an extended vacation from this business of running everyone else's business and the world of dream-crime starts to realize how necessary he is. Fics in this fandom take us to a lot of exotic places, right? We're all pretty used to that; it's old hat by now. So how is it that this author is able to make them feel so very haloed in the light of introspection and self-discovery? Arthur is so solemnly pragmatic, with such underlying BAMFery, that he is irresistibly thrilling. Note: This fic is now complete, though the story will have a (more A/E) sequel.

    ETA: Sequel starts here.

Completely unrelatedly, AGAIN with the next horrible eljay header. WTF IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? This was the winner, by a good 8% lead. UGH.
osaraba: (inception ae foreplay)
Too many WIPs, not enough updates. Well, that's not really true. But it feels like it because I WANT ALL THE FIC. Here are some you should be reading:
  1. [livejournal.com profile] heyheyrenay's can't get enough of you (baby) (complete in 31 parts). Arthur/Eames. It's sort of kidfic? BUT NOT AU. It has a kid in it, who is the most adorable baby EVER (or at least that's what Eames would say), but she's not really the focus of the story, so you should read this even if kidfic isn't your thing. There's SO MUCH TRUST. SO MUCH OF IT. One might say too much, which is where the light touch of angst comes into play. Renay has such a fine hand with angst. I couldn't approve more.

  2. Anon's The Source of All Things (WIP, currently at part 22/?). Arthur/Eames. STEAMPUNK AND MAGIC AU. The story is intriguing and mysterious and epic (please ignore my boner for Author-anon's world-building, thanks), and as entertaining as a Real™ Published Book. If you're into fantasy you should read this. The steampunk is done with a light touch, so don't let that scare you away if steampunk isn't your thing. Author-anon is doing an interesting thing which is sort of rarely done in published works-- you know how usually the relationship is either passionate and rushed into because of the urgency of the situation? You know, the characters are thrown together in a high-pressure situation and become unusually close as a result? Or the other extreme, where the urgency/high-pressure sitch causes the characters to put their attraction on the backburner instead? Well here it seems like Author-anon is walking the road-less-taken: the characters are tentatively exploring their relationship/attraction while the Crazy!Mystery/Situation builds up around them. THIS IS EXCITING TO ME! \o/

Have you seen the new Inception stills yet? If not, go search tumblr. I've reblogged a few, but there are more. PRETTY, BAMFY EAMES,and T-HARD PRACTISING HIS TRIGGER DISCIPLINE EVEN WITHOUT A GUN MAKES ME WANT TO READ MOAR FIC.

I know, you're asking yourself: Dear god, what DOESN'T make Sara want to read MOAR FIC?!
My answer: I don't know, guys, I DON'T KNOW.
osaraba: (pain)
There have been SO many amazingly good fics lately just in general. I know I've said before how amazingly prolific and high-quality this fandom is. Well. This story by [livejournal.com profile] persephone_il just took my breath away. It's everything I love in existential published fiction, which I don't read very often because I don't really know where to look, or what authors to look for, and which I almost never come across in fanfic. That kind of dark, surreal, sort-of-horrific imagery that is so visceral and cutting. The sort of thing that matches so fucking perfectly with the plot and character-introspection that it all just mirrors itself but is so slick and smooth that it just slides right over you. Ugh, I have so many ~feelings~ about it that I can't articulate but I want to say more than the usual incoherent squee.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS. And if you feel even half of what I feel about it, leave her feedback.

However, please take heed of the warnings in case this is Not Your Thing.
Sustenance by [personal profile] the_ragnarok

Summary: AU. "Nobody in their business comes by their skills for free. There is always someone to train you, to remake you in the image of your chosen profession. Their world is a place of ownerships. The best you could hope for was a long, comfortable leash."
Contains: Body horror, oblique references to violence against children, sort-of-but-not-really cannibalism.

And if anyone reads this and has ANY recommendations for fic/books/movies/etc. that have a similar feel to this, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IMMEDIATELY. The thing that came to mind for me was eXistenZ, but I don't know if the movie actually really compares as I read the book based on the movie and it was less than stellar.
osaraba: (inception arthur pointman)
Have I ever mentioned how much I love serial-killer romance? Like, a "normal" person (of clearly questionable morality) romantically involved with a socio/psychopath? Well, I do.

Have I also mentioned how much I love Inception fandom? Because it gives me things like Arthur, the gentleman killer and Eames, the profiler. <333
[livejournal.com profile] cobweb_diamond's serial-killer WIP: the origin thread.
Or if you want to go direct to the fic:
  1. commentfic: why Arthur will never again go by another name
  2. the part where Arthur "protects" Eames by sabotaging his subway train (in 7 parts)
  3. sequel to the subway fic, involving a tattoo gun (in 3 parts)
  4. sequel fic: wherein Eames is kidnapped by someone not-Arthur (in 5 parts)
  5. future fic: wherein Eames snoops through Arthur's stuff (in 2 parts)

Can I also mention how much it pleases me that this takes place in NYC? I may need to go re-read the Detective Kathy Mallory novels, by Carol O'Connell. I highly recommend this series!!!! O'Connell hasn't come out with a new one in a year or two, but I still have hope because she's done this before (to write stand-alone mystery novels) and then gone back to the Mallory series. BADASS SOCIOPATHIC FEMALE NYPD DETECTIVE: what more could you ask for? Well, I suppose a romance, but considering the level of her sociopathy, I don't know how much it would really work. So basically, she's as awesome as it gets. <3

So hey, I've been reading fanfic (off and on) for about 14 years now. And I've got all these new friends, which is lovely! (Hi guys! *waves*) And I've been reccing so much from Inception fandom because the writing is inordinately high-quality and prolific. So I find myself wondering... WHAT DO *YOU GUYS* LIKE TO READ? (Mostly I mean fic-wise, but include any kind of reading you wish!) I'd do a poll but why should I make you put your answers into a little ticky box?
osaraba: (laby sarah beautiful)
So [livejournal.com profile] suchdisguise (aka [livejournal.com profile] ifeelbetter) posted an offer to write commentfic based on location. I normally don't make prompts and probably wouldn't have, but she mentioned being inspired by the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva for a previous fic and I had one of those oh moments.

I've wanted to visit the the praying hall of the Great Mosque of Córdoba for the. longest. time. Okay, so technically, almost 12 years now? Since that AP Art History class I had in senior year of high school. (That's pretty equivalent to "the longest time", I think.)
In any case, the commentfic she wrote in response was just perfect.
I'm going to get there one day, and then I'll think of this moment, and it'll be even better. I think in some ways the Moorish arches are to me what Penrose stairs are to Arthur. Or vice versa.
osaraba: (sara)
Sooo.... my throat is all sorts of fucked up. You know that talking louder thing that happens when you get drunk? Well, I don't know if I was screaming or what, exactly, but I'm all squeaky and whispery when I talk. It's actually pretty hilarious as I keep forgetting and then suddenly laugh or try to say something to my roomie and it comes out silent for a second or two before my voice squeakily kicks in. SRS LOLZ PEOPLE.

Completely unrelatedly, Rian Johnson's tumblr for his new movie, Looper posted a pic of JGL, Noah Segan, and Lukas Haas!!! BRICK REUNION IN NOLA!!!! This made me all sorts of *flail* and happy because you guys may or may not know how much I love Brick!

on my tumblr:

...and now, for some AWESOME fanart (haha, not by me) )

Um, yeah. That's all I've got for now. I'm supposed to be posting my Sex Is Not the Enemy fic today, but I don't think I'll be able to until later. IT HAS BEEN GIVING ME ALL SORTS OF TROUBLE. =/

ETA: I just saw that [livejournal.com profile] paperflower86 is selling her papercuts. I made this post about 12 hours after she'd posted her sale and didn't know about it til now. AND AND AND the Arthur/Eames papercut I love hadn't been claimed. WELL IT IS NOW. IT IS CLEARLY THE UNIVERSE'S VALENTINES DAY PRESENT TO ME.
osaraba: (merlin arthur chillaxing)
OH MY GOD PEOPLE, sorry this list is so long! This is stuff I've been meaning to rec from like, 1-2 weeks ago (in no particular order):
SHERLOCK (John/Sherlock)

lasjdflsjalfjslfjdlsjfsld I happened to refresh my flist right as [livejournal.com profile] wordstrings was posting A Thousand Threads of What-Might-Have-Beens, so I was like Part 1! ASLDFJASLJFLSDJF YAY! Where's part 2? *waits a few minutes* *refreshes* OMG THERE'S PART TWO AND THREEEEEE!

And then I punched myself and died because I realized I wouldn't be able to read it until I got back from Toronto. But as usual, it is amazing. In some ways slightly angstier than the others in the series, but also somehow more lighthearted. I don't know how, but that's the impression I left with.

If you haven't already read the rest of the stories in this series, start working your way through her master post.

MERLIN (all Arthur/Merlin)
  1. A New Low by Anon. Full of humor! The OP asked for diabetic!Merlin and anon delivered so sweetly (pun intended). Lighthearted and delightful. <3

  2. IF YOU DON'T READ Anon's Pairing Pendragon/Merlin YOU JUST MIGHT REGRET IT FOR THE REST OF YOUR FANNISH LIFE. Arthur is a BNF and Merlin is his beloved beta. Basically, this is so fucking meta that the comments on the original kinkmeme format felt like they were part of the fic itself. I just about bust a fucking gut laughing at this, people, so just go read it.

  3. [livejournal.com profile] skellerbvvt's 8x12x8 (Parts 1 2 3 4 5 6). Not so much an AU as a what if -- What if Arthur had been imprisoned (from birth, practically) by Uther as a response to his guilt over Igraine, rather than raising him to be his successor? This is more about the journey of Arthur's development into what he was destined to become than anything else. I don't know how Skeller does it; she's just amazing.

INCEPTION (all Arthur/Eames except #1)
  1. Here In Spain I Am A Spaniard by [livejournal.com profile] soda_and_capes. So. This isn't Arthur/Eames. It's Eames/Yusuf and multiple other pairings I would normally not necessarily read. There's a little unrealized-A/E, but... you know, it's unrealized. But you should read this because it's the most realistic I've seen all these characters written, with their flaws and faults and insights. Arthur in particular.

  2. Maybe You and I Will Fall in Love by [livejournal.com profile] traincar. This is edgy and it hurts; it's sharp and jagged and beautiful. Not a pleasant read, but one that's moving and SO worth it.

  3. Tales From Liberty City by [livejournal.com profile] butterflythread. Delightful, sexy and hot with a real 80s movie atmosphere -- you know, like forbidden and wild and adventurous (and yet somehow without porn)! How does that even happen?

  4. Existentialism on Prom Night by [livejournal.com profile] sometimesalways. OMFG This fic just somehow worked itself into my brain and hasn't left me alone! Arthur and Eames are teenagers in 1996 and GODDAMN it's like she went to high school with me or something. Music plays a big role in this and basically I was having flashbacks of junior and high school throughout. Ah, nostalgia. I won't mention how for a week or two after I read this, my iPhone/playlist consisted of Bush and Jesus and Mary Chain (both featured in the fic) and other examples of post-grunge 90s rock. Ahahaha.

  5. Under the Steinway (series) by [livejournal.com profile] toomuchplor. The series is listed in chronological order, rather than published order, though I prefered having read it in published order. Pianist!Arthur and Baritone!Eames meet in music college. If you don't know anything about music (that is, reading, playing, studying, etc.) -- and I don't -- don't worry, this is still fucking amazing. Descriptions are written in such a way that you get a feel for what's going on even if you don't quite understand. If you do know music, clearly you will have transcended to another level with this fic. The shorter fics that follow take place years later, when they're "grown up".

  6. [livejournal.com profile] whiskyrunner's The Running Play (Part 1 2, 3, 4, part 5 will be the last part). OH GOD THE LOVELY LOVELY ANGST. Footballer!Eames and Serious Student!Arthur are kind of dumb, kind of willing to be oblivious to certain things, and are both in serious denial of some serious stuff) -- basically, very much like teenagers/early 20-somethings can genuinely be (and often are). This fic tackles (oh god, I didn't even mean to make that pun) serious issues and includes noncon and gaybashing. It illustrates a tragic situation that's probably all too real for some.

  7. [livejournal.com profile] skellerbvvt's Rule Ten (WIP, part 111/? but comment-length, and updated daily!). JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. Started out as Arthur/Jailbait!Eames, but as it turned out to have a BDSM slant to it, and Skeller could not in good conscience let a 16-yr old Eames get into an intense BDSM relationship with Arthur without any other supports in his life, this turned into a monster of a WIP. YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW AWESOME IT IS TO HAVE SOMEONE WRITING THIS SORT OF BDSM RELATIONSHIP. I AM SUCH A SUCKER FOR ALL THE FUMBLING ATTEMPTS AT COMMUNICATION AND ARTHUR'S GUILTY CONSCIENCE. AND JFC, THEY HAVEN'T EVEN DONE ANYTHING MORE THAN KISS (YET). IT'S SO FUCKING GORGEOUS I CAN'T EVEN TALK ABOUT IT WITHOUT RESORTING TO CAPSLOCK. (SORRY.)

  8. [livejournal.com profile] delires's We Can Do This Until We Pass Out, aka the chav!verse (WIP, part 6/7). Eames is a total chav but Arthur loves it. Yeah, that's basically it. There's plot and it's good, but it's mostly secondary to their relationship and the fact that what they like about each other is how they're so different, and their differences can sometimes be huge points of contention. EAMES SPEAKS SLANG AND IT IS BRILLIANT AND AWESOME AND I WOULD GO AROUND TALKING LIKE THAT IF I WOULDN'T SOUND LIKE AN IDIOT, BRUV. ALSO THIS HAS RENEWED MY (previously mild) INTEREST IN GRIME AND DUBSTEP WTF. I won't mention how I have a playlist called big up the chav on my iTunes (and if you're interested in what's on it I will gladly send you the list/link) and how I may be going to a dubstep event at Terminal 5 next month. =D

And yes, there are a bunch of other fics that have been posted recently (including some big bangs) that I will rec soon! (So you should hurry and read these before I rec again!)

ETA: Link to my playlist and grime/dubstep/indie (hip)hop recs in the comments. If you check it out, please comment, I'd love to know what you think and/or if you have any recs of your own.

WHO IS WRITING THIS AS ARTHUR? LAJSDLFJASLDJFALSJFDSL;AJ;LJ

*SCREAM*

osaraba: (brick brendanlaura trustmenow)
A;LSJDLFJASLDFJASDLJF AHAHAHAHA I HOPE SOMEONE FILLS THIS [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic PROMPT OMFG

RPF, Lady Gaga&Joseph Gordon-Levitt, she's had a crush on him ever since Angels in the Outfield and then she sees the video of him singing "Bad Romance"

And now I want to read/write something where they're in a dream and Eames forges Lady Gaga (in one of her crazier-looking personas) but Arthur is so uninterested in pop culture that he doesn't know the reference and is totally turned on and freaked out at the same time. AHAHAHAH THIS MENTAL IMAGE WILL KEEP ME ENTERTAINED FOR... at least half an hour.

In other news, this was originally going to be a post about how I really really want to write more introspective ficlets for Brick but I'm lazy. I need prompts because I have no ideas for one (because I'm lazy), and also whatever I write will definitely be a ficlet as the language thing is somewhat difficult to sustain for anything longer than 1,000 words at a time (because I'm lazy).

There you have it.

ETA: Ahahah, today's XKCD is too true.

[livejournal.com profile] knowmydark's Moment of Inertia: Parts 1, 2, 3.

From an author whose unusual format fic I always love the hell out of (and have recced before), is this glorious piece of tension, angst, sadness, and love. I have been practically pining for this psychopathic!Arthur fic, and it is nothing like I expected; I usually expect psychopathic- or sociopathic-protagonist fic to be... kind of a guilty pleasure (though I don't actually feel guilt over it) -- but honestly, something like a kink: delectably forbidden and sexual and thrilling. This was NOT that. This was lovely and horrifying and depressing and uplifting and how can it be all these things at once?!! The build of tension is as wonderful and painful as its release is a mix of relief and horror.

I said a bit more (with less coherence and more spoilers) in my comment on the fic, and I think the combination of that and what I've said here is probably as much as can be wrung out of me.

I will say that after reading it, you should also read [livejournal.com profile] weatherfront's lovely comment, which is almost as moving as the fic, in its understanding and clarity of speaking to the larger implications and depths of the story.

You might be sad, in the end, but you won't be sad to have read it.
osaraba: (inception ae foreplay)
I recced [livejournal.com profile] whiskyrunner's Rough Trade before, when it was part 1 of 2. Well it's finished now, and you need to go fucking read this. The pacing is perfect; there were so many opportunities for this to go wrong, to veer off into the stereotypical -- but it stayed true, and real, and took its time and let realizations turn into changes naturally rather than being rushed, explosive epiphanies.

Parts: 1, 2a, 2b
osaraba: (tom hardy suitpr0n)
You know those stories where they circle around each other -- maybe even for years -- letting the tension, the connection, go unacknowledged even though they both know it's there? Maybe not wanting to chance giving up their secrets, changing the dynamic, ruining it? And then there are things-- you know, plotty things, case-type things going on in the background? Not really enough to make it a casefic or a genfic, but just enough to make it all feel so very real? Well, these have done that so very, very well. You should really check them out.
  1. [personal profile] renay's To Acheive the Impossible Dream [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. Slow, steady, deliberate, full of secrets. Inevitable. It's hard to describe why and how much I love this fic. <3

  2. [livejournal.com profile] witling's The Third Time (Part 1, Part 2) [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. Arthur's a bit oblivious in this one-- more about himself than anyone else, I think.

  3. [livejournal.com profile] five_ht's This Could Be Our Reward [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. A bit more lighthearted, less epic, but again with the secrets. Sometimes the lies we tell reveal more than the truth.

Oh yeah, and then there's the angst: lies, secrets, self-delusion. The stuff that doesn't necessarily come with a happy ending. Oh, the secret suffering; it hurts so good.
  1. [livejournal.com profile] tequilideas's The Fabulist [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. Eames lies to himself just as well as he lies to Arthur.

  2. [livejournal.com profile] downwardlinear's Parent of Disillusion [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. It's not what it looks like from the outside.
osaraba: (brick brendan bleedatyou)
So I'm mostly still away from my computer until Monday at work, but I'm eating into my sleeping hours reading fanfic and profic because I'm GOING FUCKING CRAZY helping my parents work on house stuff before a cousin on my father's side comes to visit next week. And I don't think you guys have ever seen me going fucking crazy because I'm normally the most even-tempered person you've ever seen and I don't really allow crap to crossover into LJ much, but JFC, when this is over I'm going to lock myself in my room and not come out for days and days, which is kind of what I've been doing after work for the last month or two anyway. lasjdfljasfl

ANYWAY. I have to make a couple of random recs for fic that have really really lifted my spirits because of how fucking amazingly badass or angsty or epic or hilarious they are:

  1. THE BADASS: [Inception, Arthur/Eames] [livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon's Unexpected Plot Twist. WIP (currently at 2/3, but with the end part projected for Sunday) Parts: 1 2, 3a, 3b. The description I wrote for my delicious notes effectively describes all that I love about it: romantical. action. potty-mouthed badassery. DADT. clothes-shopping pr0n. dialogue like broken glass. "turning obscenity into something aspirationally untouchable." hair triggers. gratuity of every flavor. basically, FUCK YES.

  2. THE ANGSTY: [Inception, Arthur/Eames] [livejournal.com profile] whiskyrunner's Rough Trade. WIP (at 1/2, with the end projected for next week). Written as a fill for a prompt from the heavens by a magical OP-anon; Arthur can't admit to himself what he wants, and Eames doesn't let him deny himself. That's really an inadequate description, but it's all very harsh and kind of brutal and devastatingly delicious.

  3. THE EPIC: [Inception, Arthur/Eames] [livejournal.com profile] sho_no_tabi's Life During Wartime. Can be read alone, but it's really part of a bigger series (in order: A Soul Awake, Something Like, LDW, and then the current WIP complete Red Oni, Blue Oni), wherein Arthur's background is something that makes me squee uncontrollably. Relatedly, some of the dialogue makes me flail uncontrollably as well. I don't want to spoil the subtle reveal because I know that not knowing about it at first made the realization SO MUCH SWEETER for me.

  4. THE HILARIOUS: [Merlin, Arthur/Merlin] [livejournal.com profile] moonythestrals' A Random Collection of Firsts. Really you should read the absolutely unexpectedly adorable Fratboy!AU that comes before this because it would lack impact if you didn't -- which was great, don't get me wrong -- but the coda is what had me giggling and laughing full-out, with a moment or two of jaw-droppingly HOT FUCK YES sort of reactions.

  5. BONUS MUSIC REC: So I went to see the Alvin Ailey dance performance on Wednesday, which was lovely, really. But I left determined to find more music by the FRENCH INDUSTRIAL PERCUSSION group Les Tambours du Bronx. FUCK YESSSSSS. During one of the pieces I had to resist the urge to get up and dance. I wanted nothing more than to leave and go to an industrial club and dance until 4am. HOW DID I NOT KNOW THEY EXIST?! I have been listening to them ALL NIGHT tonight. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send you some mp3s!
osaraba: (sherlock sh library)
I don't know how I ended up writing rec posts here (or anywhere) as I've never done that before, but I think my mind has just been blown by the awesomeness that is Inception fandom. And I need to like, keep track of it somehow.

And what's even more ridic is that as much as I want to, I can't seem to write anything for it... but that desire to write keeps turning into thoughts about writing due South fic, but then I don't have the time (or the right mindset right now) to pursue it, and I may need a prompt of some sort anyway. I know, my life is so hard.

Know what else? I'm helping a friend out with her new fic (kink)meme, dedicated to CROSSOVERS!!! So if you like them, come on over and prompt yourself sick!!!

Aaaand: more Inception recs! You hate me, I know. )
osaraba: (tom hardy suitpr0n)
YES MORE ASEXUAL!FIC by [livejournal.com profile] persephone_il. IT IS SO FREAKING GOOD, AND SO REAL, AND SO LOVELY. IT WINS ALL THE THINGS. EVER. And this time it's asexual!Eames! Which is surprising because it doesn't fit fanon!Eames who tends to be a sex god of sorts, but I think it makes just as much sense as asexual!Arthur. I mean, let's be realistic -- there's not a lot to work with in the canon (or conversely, there's a lot to work with because they don't really give us a lot of solid information about them).

We're making assumptions based on certain things, but so much of canon is based on, I don't know, extrapolation of physical attributes, I think? I said this at the Inception panel, and I'll say it again-- Eames is much quieter and introverted than Arthur is, really. He's always quietly sitting, observing. He fidgets, but it's in little ways. But we see Arthur interacting with more ease, and a more expressive/open face. But since he wears the sleeker suits, has his hair slicked back, clearly he's more... what, repressed? restrained? But he has such an open face!

I didn't actually mean to go on about this again; it was all said in the first month of fandom. but I suppose that when I think about these things too hard (which is not infrequently), I resign myself to the fact that fanon hivemind is and always will be utterly baffling! (If still highly entertaining.)

ETA: I just realized that that whole second paragraph could possibly be misinterpreted to mean that those are reasons why Eames is more believable as asexual than Arthur? And that's not what I meant at all. It was more about making assumptions as to characterisation and no sexual or asexual implications were intended.

In other news, I want to go see The King's Speech like burning! COLIN FIRTH. GEOFFREY RUSH. HELENA BONHAM CARTER. THIS IS ALL I REALLY NEEDED TO KNOW. But the actual plot of it sounds brilliant as well; I have a huge weakness for any situation which involves watching the protagonist learning/training to prepare for/overcome something (anyone have a convenient Trope Title for this?). I DON'T KNOW HOW I COULD POSSIBLY FIND THIS MOVIE WANTING IN ANY WAY. Why is it only a limited release? Only playing in two theaters in NYC next week. ...ahahah Jennifer Ehle is in this too. <3

What is it with you lame-ass post spamming all day, Sara?! is what you might be asking right now.

I APOLOGIZE, FLIST!

Still, I wanted to rec what I believe to be rageprufrock's SPEC-FUCKING-TACULAR new NEWSPAPER!AU fic, though it is currently by author-anon.

Ironically, she tends to use the word shitstorm (which, did I mention, totally throws me out of the story every freaking time?) in everything she writes that's longer than a couple thousand words, which is why I'm thinking it's Pru. Still, whether it's her or not makes no difference because REALLY, THIS FIC IS FUCKING AMAZING (WHY IS ARTHUR SUCH AN ADORABLE-YET-SLIGHTLY-INSECURE BAMF?!) AND SHOULD BE READ NO MATTER WHAT. Oh, did I mention it's a WIP? Sorry guys.

ETA: ALSO I JUST BOUGHT THIS TEE FROM TEEFURY.COM. YOU HAVE 3 HOURS LEFT IF YOU WANT ONE FOR YOURSELF!

Crossover fanart:
  1. Anon's adorable fanart fill to this XXXHolic crossover prompt.

  2. maywood-preston's Sherlock/Misfits crossover fanart (via tumblr). Adorable and so true (even though I haven't actually seen Misfits and don't know what it's about. Though I might have to check it out now. Oh, Sherlock.

And. Round 11 of the [livejournal.com profile] inception_kink meme is open. How is it that I still need Inception fic like fucking burning?!

Also, I currently have no music playing. Please suggest something!

Inception Crossover fic recs!

  1. POSTED TODAY: [livejournal.com profile] frantic_allonsy's crossover with Merlin, in which the team incepts King Arthur. Since I just saw s1 plus a few eps of s2, I consider this good timing! SO DAMN GOOD (so far, as I'm in the middle of part 2); lovely and subtle and more quiet than I was expecting. AND OH JESUS, ALSO EXTREMELY HOT!<3

  2. [livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon's crossover with Harry Potter, in which Arthur and Eames are wizards. Hahah, this is as close as I've come to being tempted to read the books when I've managed to avoid anything and everything to do with HP (books AND movies). I highly recommend it based on Kassie's usual writing. I probably will not read this for another couple of years. (How ridic am I right now? Yeah.)

  3. [livejournal.com profile] butterflythread's crossover with Equilibrium, in which Arthur is a Grammaton cleric and Eames is a sense offender. Lovely and sad and hopeful; it captures the feel of the movie perfectly. <3

  4. [livejournal.com profile] finkpishnets's crossover with Brick, in which Brendan receives a visit from a stranger in a dream. I tend to like the ones where Arthur used to be Brendan, but this one's got a unique idea. Slightly more Brick-focused than Inception, and I wish there were more in this verse, dammit.

  5. [livejournal.com profile] whiskyrunner's crossover with Mysterious Skin, in which Arthur used to be Neil. All kinds of angst and fuckery. Poor Arthur Neil Eames is all I can say. It's heart-wrenching (as always) to read her stuff, but the end (and the two one-part sequels) are SO worth it!

  6. [livejournal.com profile] pyrimidine's crossover with Time Traveler's Wife, in which Eames travels a lot. And Arthur waits. ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. I may have recced this before, but it deserves another. I read the book because of this fic. It is so much love, IDEK.

  7. [livejournal.com profile] cobweb_diamond's crossover with Burn Notice, in which... I don't actually know what happens because I haven't read it yet and neither have I seen the show. So, yeah. I'm reccing based solely on the quality of Gav's writings.

  8. BONUS: FANART and crossover with... RL!THARD? Now We're Cooking by [livejournal.com profile] red_rahl, in which EAMES IS COOKIN A TURKEY YO xX

I just started watching Lie to Me based on a friend's recommendation -- and realizing how similar it is to all the Holmesian shows (House, The Mentalist) out there. Which are, of course, my favorites. Well, so "just" started watching means I saw season 1 over the holiday and am looking forward to starting season 2. It's a wee bit more episodic than I usually like, but am enjoying the characters despite some of the cheesiness inherent in depicting the workings of the main character's talent in reading people's true emotions based on "microexpressions".

So yes, I WOULD NOT BE AGAINST AN INCEPTION/LIE TO ME CROSSOVER FIC RIGHT NOW.

your name on my lips and my knife at your throat by [livejournal.com profile] stungunbilly is a little thing, full of filth and denial, with an unexpected little helping of jealousy like a treat for dessert.

And now all of a sudden I'm dying for some jealous!Arthur fic. Even better, something where he gets unexpectedly physical in reaction to the focus of Eames' flirting. Anyone have any recs for me?
