a time of upheaval

So while LJ was indisposed I decided to pretend it didn't exist and pretty much ignored the situation altogether. It seems to be back (or close) to normal now, so here I am. I've been in this weird limbo of unemployed with lots of free time.... and somehow finding myself sort of busy. And ffs, spending too much time with my parents. I spent 10 hours with them yesterday, helping my father buy and set up an awesome new laptop. But. TEN HOURS. =/

Just saw this movie from 2007 called Shelter, which was just great. It's about a guy named Zack, an artist in the ghetto of some SoCal city, with a sister who's a big flake and a 5-year old nephew who has clearly hung the moon and all because Zack is holding the ladder steady beneath him. His best friend goes out of town for a while and his brother stays there, and he and Zack end up hanging out, surfing a lot, and falling for each other.

Of course there's more to it, but it's pretty typical and straightforward -- nothing happens that you couldn't see coming a mile away, but it's sweet, and it's just-- nice to see this sort of romance/drama with a gay couple. =D I recommend it if you're looking for an easy, pleasant way to spend an hour and a half. <3

So now is where I'm going to get all fannish and say I WANT THE SPENCER/BRENDON AU! FIC FOR THIS MOVIE! They're surfer dudes! In southern California! The artist (~musician?) angle with family troubles is ALREADY THERE! There's an adorable kid! What more do we need? And really, WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN WRITTEN ALREADY? =(

LOL, when I came out I keep seeing icons of this really hot guy and FINALLY someone told me what it was from and I dl it and watched it. Oddly enough I never think of it and want to read fic for or about it but if I where into bandom I would totally read an AU fic for Panic and Shelter

I didn't hear about when it came out, people had icons from it after it came out in like '08/09 or so I ask a bunch of people what their icons were from till someone finally told me then watched it and was like OMG LOVE.

Awww, I loooooove Shelter! The two male leads had insane amounts of chemistry (at one point, I thought my laptop was going to roll her eyes at me for rewinding their makeout scenes. Like it's my fault that said scenes were hot? MOVING ON.)

Wish I could rec you Shelter fic, but--though I know it exists--I would say there's better fic out there. :-/

That's a neat bunny, btw. So, who exactly would Brendon and Spencer play? 'cause, like, I can see Brendon be the skater/artist!dude. Hee! You should try to write a drabble for them, yeah? :D?

Nah, I don't know if I'm all that interested in Shelter fic anyway. It's one of those where the canon is pretty satisfying and I'm not really looking to get more out of the story. It was entertaining to watch, though. =D

Yeah, I was totally thinking of Brendon as the skater/artist dude!!! I sort of wondered if people might object to Spencer being the one who's okay with his sexuality and Brendon being the one who's freaking out about it (a little), but I don't have a problem with it and it's been done anyway. =D

Ooooh, I could write a snippet, probably. I'm pretty bad with epic plots and stuff, but yep, I can totally do short scenes. I'll think on this. YOU ENABLER, YOU.

BTW, if you haven't read Signs Point to Yes (Frank/Gerard, Spencer/Brendon) yet, PLEASE DO SO ASAP. It's short and adorable and HILARIOUS.

The first time I heard about Shelter was through the newsletter for the LGTB film festival in my city. Unfortch, it was sold out. And then it was supposed to be playing at some nearby city, but I don't think it ever did. So, I kinda forgot about it until it came out on DVD and saw a write up of it on some website (most probably AfterElton.)

What caught my attention was the whole gay skateboarder angle. So, I added it to my Netflix queue and, once I watched it, kept it for about two weeks. I still rewatch it and pimp it to people who might be looking for a sweet-with-a-smidgen-of-edge gay movie.

Re Shelter!fic: yes, you're right. The fact that the canon is very satisfying was something of a deterrent as far as fully enjoying fic. Other than that, I have to admit that the quality of that fandom's stories isn't. quite. high (imho.) I mean, what else is there to say once you get Zach and Shaun happy and together?

The only two fics that come to mind that were good enough for me to remember them to this day are one told from Gabe's pov in which he tries out the 'gay thing' in his own goofy way. The other one was one written for Yuletide a few yeas ago, iirc, in which we see what life was like for Zach and Shaun. That fic was told through Cody's eyes (which is what got me reading it.)

I haven't gotten around reading Bexless' fic (she's one of the Frank/Gerard authors one MUST read) yet, but thankies to the tip. ;)
