So here's
bookshop's reading and interpretation of the film.
http://bookshop.livejournal.com/1061263.html
Several of her points are ones I'd thought of; the whole inconsistency with bouncing from the upper layers of dreams into limbo and then back again is something Liz and I discussed -- as well as the inconsistency of Arthur not being kicked out of the dream at the 2nd layer when he really should have (meaning one can only be kicked out of a dream when one is ready and willing to); and actually, her explanation of how there's no bottom layer made more sense to me than when Zoltan tried to explain it.
And also her response to the whole "BUT I WANT IT TO BE REALITY BECAUSE THEN IT'S A HAPPY ENDING" reaction?
My response to that? THIS! THIS! THIS!
I also love her theory about Mal, which also definitely occurred to me even during the first viewing -- and actually, I realize now that I've been totally ignoring it in discussions after the movie, even though I'm thinking it during the movie. Which means, I guess, that I don't particularly prefer that interpretation and yet it's definitely a valid one -- one of the easiest to fully support! I'm so disappointed in myself. =/
AND! AND! The Ariadne-is-actually-Cobb's-daughter theory is an AWESOME one! IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE, within, of course, the interpretation that it's all Cobb's dream and some of the others are sharing his dream to help him out.
OKAY SERIOUSLY, DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS MOVIE?!
BONUS SEXY TIMES:
Possibly everyone reading this may have witnessed my Tom Hardy obsession explosion yesterday on Twitter? If not, you missed the chance to laugh at Sara's INCOHERENT CAPSLOCK FLAIL.... and also clearly delusional statements in which Sara asserts that Tom Hardy exists only to have her bite his face and tats. And Sara randomly talks in third person... What?
DUDES: TOM HARDY HAS DONE A COUPLE (this makes me extremely happy)
THIS PICTURE ALSO MAKES ME EXTREMELY HAPPY

see, one of the things i really like about the film is that it makes the point that you can have your happy ending, your emotional catharsis and your shift in awareness, without knowing if it's real or not. and i love how that plays into the idea that our reality is *what we make it*, and how that translates to everything from the way we watch a film to close internet relationships with people we never meet.

Date: 2010-07-29 08:32 pm (UTC)THIS! And you, the viewer, are the film's subject. The dreamer, Christopher Nolan, is also the film's Architect. He constructed the space, and to it you have brought your own projections. SO MUCH! That puts it much better than what I was trying to say about the viewer making the ultimate choice at the end and adds tghe whole aspect of Nolan as the dreamer. Love it!
how there's no bottom layer
Also totally agree with this. I was actually talking about this with a friend at work today, with whom I went to see it. Remember the circle diagram Cobb drew and the paradoxes within the dreams like the endless stairways? On top of that, Nolan's oftentimes circular structure in films - Memento was a constantly repeating story in a way (don't wanna reveal too much, heee ;)
(Oddly enough, this reminds me of an Eddie Izzard sketch about fashion being a circle... looking like a dickhead, okay, good, great, hip, reaaly hip, reeeaaallly hip, and a dickhead again!)

And yes,

Date: 2010-07-30 05:20 am (UTC)I really need to see this movie again (I've only gone once, boo!), because I keep thinking of things I need to look at more closely! Like just now reading that link, I realized how the dreams are color coded, and my mind just got blown a little bit more. I have a lot more deep thoughts about Inception but it's late and my brain is no longer functioning, but seriously, best movie ever y/y?

Date: 2010-07-30 01:26 pm (UTC)I meant to mention the color-coded dreams and totally forgot! I didn't notice this at all, and am seriously *headdesk*ing -- but it's AWESOME! <3 Going to see it again on Sunday and will pay particular attention to this.
SO MUCH to think about re this movie! \o/
