Everyone's saying this Katsu was "not the best Katsu ever, but..." But I'd say it went similarly to last year for me. I worked 10 hours on Friday, 10 hours on Saturday, and 5 hours on Sunday, followed by driving back to NYC. After breaking down the booth each day, I went to hang out/party with friends until 3:30/4am each night. IT WAS PRETTY FUCKING AWESOME. I've got no complaints -- this is exactly what I was looking for out of this con.

I would have liked to hang out with NA more, and meet some of Judy's new friends, but instead I hung out with some new people -- Jon and Patches -- and CUBE!, whom I don't usually hang out with at cons, but which I obviously must rectify because he's a ton of fun! And this was IMMENSELY enjoyable. =D

I also didn't get totally wasted, but I had a nice buzz going on Saturday night, thanks to Rymel and his delicious concoctions. My additional flask of gin did come in handy, though.

Thanks again to Yoshi, Jerry, Sean Kelly, Cube, John, and Rymel for helping out at the booth -- we couldn't have run as smoothly as we did without you guys! =D

Memories of note:
  • driving to VA
  • meeting Jon
  • working all of Friday
  • going out to that 24hr diner with the scary waitress with the shakes who kept holding the menu up between her face and Jim's
  • conversations with Yoshi and Jerry
  • walking back to the hotel alongside the highway, between the trees and the concrete, with Jim leading the way with his flashlight
  • bumping into Jon, Cube, and Patches and acting silly, chasing each other around. I want some of those pics, Cube!
  • working all of Saturday
  • wearing those awesome rockabilly Penthouse shoes!
  • killing Jerry at Uno at the maid cafe
  • chatting with Jon, Cube, Jim and Peter at the Valentine Ball
  • running into Peter again at the bar, mooching booze off of Rymel
  • slapping Jerry on the ass to wake him up... with Jim taking pictures
  • randomly talking to some army guy at the bar, and Nikkia, whom I know I've met, but have no idea where/when
  • hanging with Cube, Judy, Anna in the bar area, and then tripping over nothing, slightly twisting my ankle, but not having anyone notice but Cube. ^_~
  • stumbling back to the room, giggling and happy
  • being really warm that night
  • driving back to NYC on Sunday, getting lost for a while in DC, but then making up for it by going 80 later
  • eating an Angry Whopper at a rest stop (which tasted 5x better than the one I had in the city)
  • singing along to mid-late 90s alternative music with Sean Kelly *high-fives!*
  • having Monday off from work, but making myself super-exhausted anyway
  • literally spending less than $20 for the whole weekend
  • not having to return Jim's car 'til last night!

All I can say is -- NEXT YEAR, THE GAYLORD!

Pancakes!

I have been super busy at work (still!) and also I have a Twitter gadget in my gmail, and since I'm on gmail all day long, I am also keeping updated on Twitter all day long. In the meantime, my LJ has suffered from my busyness.

KATSUCON! Will be in Virginia all weekend, running the booth (aka Cosclips, Katsucon's official photo booth)! If you're going to be at Katsu this year, stop by the booth and say hello! I have a feeling this con is going to be hectic and awesome. AND DRUNK. I'm driving back to NYC on Sunday -- hopefully by early evening. Luckily, I've got Monday off from work, so I get to leisurely return Jim's car to NJ and then make my way back into the city. I also don't have Japanese class that day, so I'm fucking set.

I have an excellent story to go along with this -- on Monday I called uline.com to order some supplies to be delivered to the hotel. So when I was telling the customer service rep the address of the hotel, she said, "Is this for Katsucon?" I was like "o_O! YES! We're Katsucon's official photo booth!" HAHAHA. It was AMAZINGLY AWESOME AND COINCIDENTAL AND COOL! So I told her to stop by the booth and say hi. I should have offered her a free photo or something, but didn't think of it at the time. Hopefully she'll stop by. That was just awesome and TOTALLY made my day. =D

There were other things I wanted to talk about. Dammit, why can't I think of them? Like how I got a PS3 and Judy got a 32" LCD HDTV, so now we're all tricked out and it's nice about the PS3 and all, but HOCKEY! HAHAHAHA! OH BABY!

BTW, today's XKCD is awesome.

Um, um, um... OH YEAH! I was talking to a coworker of mine whom I've been telling about cons and such. I sent her the link to Judy's flickr to show her some stuff and she asked if this chick is Sailor Moon? So I explained a little, prefacing by saying that it would sound ridiculous. And after a bit of back-and-forth, she said, "man, ever since i met you my life has gotten a lot more interesting and a lot less realistic."

DO YOU KNOW HOW AWESOME THAT WAS? =D That totally made my day! Now I'm just going around with a big smile on my face! =D

Con report and MORE STUFF on Monday, I hope.

Oh yeah, I also made pancakes for the first time on Sunday night. And now everyone's teasing me about it. WHAT! Jeez, it's not EVERYONE makes and eats pancakes all the time, people! =P

I really hope I didn't leave it at in DC. I'm pretty sure I didn't, but not 100%. Argh!

So. Thursday. The rental car we got was a black Hyundai Sonata with leather seats and a sun roof. Roomy interior and LOTS of trunk space. It was SWEEEEEET. Though we didn't get to take advantage of the sun roof -- no riding around with our heads sticking out, screaming "SPRING BREAK!" or anything like that. I really enjoyed driving down to DC -- it was a really smooth drive.

probably more than you wanted to know about Katsucon 2008. )

House certainly has the power to get me out of my head when I have a lot on my mind.

Overall: I enjoyed the con immensely. It wasn't my most favorite con EVAR, but I felt like it was definitely up there. I've had more fun at cons in the last couple of years than I ever have before. [livejournal.com profile] nerd_avengers, I love you guys! *sniffles*

And btw, gin tastes so much better without the tonic.

Friday night weirdness ensued when half the power in the house went out (oddly enough, all the power was out except for the TV outlet, so Rock Band was still able to be played... in the dark, except for the one lamp that's plugged in next to the TV), and was mirrored outside where you could see that half the block had power and half didn't. I took advantage of this opportunity to scare Maryann, which never gets old =D It's really too bad she wasn't at Anna's place on Sunday when the winds of hell blew the balcony door open abruptly as I know she would have been across the apartment in 1 second flat, possibly even clinging to the ceiling. And then when the TV turned off by itself -- ahh, what missed opportunities!

Saturday, Maryann and I went over to Judy's. Not surprisingly, we headed out a little later than we intended, but Judy got super-wasted the night before, so it worked out alright. I finished that damn Little Sister dress some time around 1am, I think! It was kind of fun to put on a dress that so obviously looks like a 5 year old should be wearing it. ^^; It was white at the time, but Judy soaked the dresses in coffee for a dirty look, though she wants to add "blood splatters" & etc., so we still have finishing touches to add. Maryann is helping us out by making a Big Daddy plushie, which I have named Mr. Bubbles, which is only fitting. He's coming along nicely. =D

We didn't get to sleep til around 3am, and woke up the next day a little before 10am to get to the New Year Parade in Chinatown, which was quite fun. Ate some decent food and actually got a decent view of the parade. I took lots of pictures, of which I may post one or two later. Maryann bought 2 "poppers" and we exploded them, which was exciting. And Judy bought a box of snaps, which I was extremely happy about as I miss sitting out on my old fire escape and throwing them down at people. Ah, nostalgia~. ALSO! I GOT MY WATCH BATTERY CHANGED, FINALLY! YAYE~!

Met up with Anna after the parade and went to her place to discuss Cosclips business. Which was probably 75% hanging out and 25% discussing business, but still, we discussed what we had to. Jim was cool and drove us all to our respective houses, for which I was extremely relieved because if I'd had to go home by train/bus from Manhattan at midnight when we got to Judy's, or at 1:30am, when we finally called it a night, it would have taken me at least 2 hours to get to Queens, plus a cab ride from the subway station to get home -- in the bitter, bitter cold, and with 3 bags, 2 large umbrellas, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Instead, it took twenty minutes, so I got home at 2am, and it was a nice toasty car ride on the extremely deserted highway. =D

Though, of course, that means I didn't get to sleep til 3am because Maryann was still up when I got home. Hahaha.

Even so, I was so full of energy -- I had a really fun time all day yesterday, and I probably could have stayed up for another hour or two, but I was well aware it was Sunday night and I had to be in decent shape for today. Good thing, too, because I've been insanely busy since around 11:30 or so. I was very sleepy during those first two hours of not having much to do. And I'm feeling a bit tired again now that it's almost quittin' time, but I have Japanese class soon...

A couple of things I wanted to ask/discuss:

(1) Katsucon.

a. Jim's offer to borrow his Jetta fell through because the engine's dead. Anyone know of someone who can replace a 95 Jetta engine for me? He's offered to give me the car, but obviously it's useless unless I can get it working. Also, I know nothing about cars except how to drive them.

b. So in light of the fact that I'm now without a ride to Katsu, does anyone want to split the cost of a rental with me & Judy? Anna & Ben (whom I'll be talking to tonight) have first dibs, but the cost of a rental is around $110-130 plus gas and tolls, of course. I'm estimating gas at $90 and tolls at $40. So we're talking about something like $65 each unless I've completely underestimated. The Greyhound to DC is only $40, so it's a bit more expensive, but also more convenient!

(2) Psych. Has anyone seen the show? What do you think of it?

(3) Has anyone seen that Tom Cruise Scientology award clip? NINE AND A HALF MINUTES of pure incoherence and circular reasoning! Talk about craziness, whoa.

(4) Kevin McCullough. As I was telling people last night, I found his blog and read a couple of random previous entries. SCARY! The only time I've ever read that sort of blatantly provocative Christian Right harangue has been in genre fiction novels, when the slightly fanatical "bad guy" spouts closed-minded drivel. Whether or not he believes all he sermonizes about aside, the fact that there are people who actually vehemently agree with him and support that POV -- it's just nightmareish.

What AJ said is true -- it's better to just not respond to his rantings than to respond and give him attention that will only serve to make him more popular. *shrugs* I never respond to blogs or forums anyway. But it's hard not to want to talk about my reaction, though I feel somewhat speechless in the face of his closed-mindedness. It's one thing to know people think this way and another to really "hear" it. Ugh.

It also just reinforces my opinion that it was a huge mistake for Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama to run against each other at this point in time. The most important thing, IMO, is for a Democrat to be elected. Who the hell cares which one? Let's just please not vote another Republican into office! I think it would be smarter for democrats to vote for whoever is more likely to win against a Republican in the Presidential Election. Unfortunately, it's a difficult choice that Clinton and Obama have forced us to make.
