You know those stories where they circle around each other -- maybe even for years -- letting the tension, the connection, go unacknowledged even though they both know it's there? Maybe not wanting to chance giving up their secrets, changing the dynamic, ruining it? And then there are things-- you know, plotty things, case-type things going on in the background? Not really enough to make it a casefic or a genfic, but just enough to make it all feel so very real? Well, these have done that so very, very well. You should really check them out.
  1. [personal profile] renay's To Acheive the Impossible Dream [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. Slow, steady, deliberate, full of secrets. Inevitable. It's hard to describe why and how much I love this fic. <3

  2. [livejournal.com profile] witling's The Third Time (Part 1, Part 2) [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. Arthur's a bit oblivious in this one-- more about himself than anyone else, I think.

  3. [livejournal.com profile] five_ht's This Could Be Our Reward [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. A bit more lighthearted, less epic, but again with the secrets. Sometimes the lies we tell reveal more than the truth.

Oh yeah, and then there's the angst: lies, secrets, self-delusion. The stuff that doesn't necessarily come with a happy ending. Oh, the secret suffering; it hurts so good.
  1. [livejournal.com profile] tequilideas's The Fabulist [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. Eames lies to himself just as well as he lies to Arthur.

  2. [livejournal.com profile] downwardlinear's Parent of Disillusion [Inception, Arthur/Eames]. It's not what it looks like from the outside.

So I used the Expedia super special deals thing and ended up with a different hotel - the Clarion Hotel & Suites Selby -- and of course it's not refundable. So, I'm sad I will not be in the same hotel as a bunch of other people, but I suppose I'll live -- it's only 1.5 miles away, so if I'm somehow hanging out at the Bond(age) Hotel, it'll be easy to get back by car or by foot.

I'm more annoyed than I sound, but really there's no use in being bothered by it.

In any case, it was pretty darn cheap so I shouldn't complain!

Now, to go book the car. Got the car! Priceline.com is pretty awesome. I AM GETTING SO EXCITED FOR THIS TRIP -- NOT THE LEAST OF WHICH IS THE ROAD TRIP PART!!!!

OH! If I do nothing else other than see The Headstones while in Toronto, I MUST go to the Hockey Hall of Fame. I'd have tried to catch a Maple Leafs game, but -- it fucking figures -- that their two home games that weekend are on the day before I get there and the day after I leave! WTF, TORONTO!

I recced [livejournal.com profile] whiskyrunner's Rough Trade before, when it was part 1 of 2. Well it's finished now, and you need to go fucking read this. The pacing is perfect; there were so many opportunities for this to go wrong, to veer off into the stereotypical -- but it stayed true, and real, and took its time and let realizations turn into changes naturally rather than being rushed, explosive epiphanies.

Parts: 1, 2a, 2b
