Did you guys know that James McAvoy and Jamie Bell will be costarring in the newest adaptation of an Irvine Welsh novel, Filth? I didn't! But I'm pretty excited for it. I started reading it a few days ago and then stumbled across the fact that principal photography for the movie started in late January and it's scheduled for a 2013 release.

One movie blog called it a "comedic thriller" but... I wonder how comedic it will really be? Like Welsh's other works, it's more disgustingly awful than comedic. And much like the main characters in Welsh's other novels (except for Trainspotting and its sequel, Porno), Robertson (the main character of Filth, played by James McAvoy) is completely unsympathetic, reprehensible, and physically disgusting (all calling back to the work's title), even though he's charismatic and apparently sexy as hell. That particular dichotomy is not at all unusual for a Welsh character.

I'm utterly fascinated by the thought of seeing McAvoy play this role. It's possible a lot of it is toned down for the movie; I wouldn't be surprised if it is, in fact. But even so, the character is morally reprehensible, and... I haven't seen McAvoy in a lot of movies, but I think this is a huge change for him (correct me if I'm wrong). In any case, it'll be a huge change for me to see him in a role like this.

I'm also really curious to see how McAvoy/XMFC fandom will react if they go out and see Filth without really knowing what they're getting into. Unless they tone it down severely, even Trainspotting won't be a good meterstick for Filth.

For my dreams last night as I watched Trainspotting and then started to read his novel Filth just before falling asleep.

To wit:

I have a dream around 5am when I'm woken up by a fucking phone call -- a NYC number I don't recognize -- and once I've figured out that I'm going to let it go to voicemail, I've already forgotten the dream. But it was something with a complex adventure plot. Sigh, I love those.

Next dream: A woman gives birth to twins by different fathers; raises them separately (one of the fathers was married), and doesn't tell the twins about each other. They live in the same area so end up at the same elementary school. This isn't a variation on The Parent Trap, however, and they're fraternal twins who don't look all that much alike so they never realize they're related.

The dream then alternates between me pushing one of the twins' baby carriages while talking to the mother (I was never able to determine who the other twin was being raised by), and being a sort of fly-on-the-wall POV inside her house (in which the walls were painted in shades of yellow and green).

The last bit of this dream was just those last two alternating scenes before somehow segueing into a good five minutes of me trying to remember the word "rugelach" and imagining myself texting Rich to ask "what's the name of that kosher fruit cookie that starts with either an 's' or a 'ch' sound?" In the dream I kept saying "Schenectady" and "hamentashen" and then chastising myself, annoyed, because those weren't the right word.

Ahahaha, I'm glad I (eventually) remembered it (around 10 minutes after waking up) because clearly the word doesn't start with either of those sounds, though I was positive it had a "ch" sound in it somewhere.

You may ask why I was trying to remember the word rugelach; I certainly did. If you figure it out, please let me know because I haven't had rugelach in years and nothing has happened lately (or even a long while ago!) to prompt the thought of it!

Finished The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs last night, shortly after coming home from work. OH MAN, there was an amazing part toward the end there -- disgustingly graphic with bodily fluids and such. Shockingly, I actually gagged after reading one particular line! After which, the expression on my face rapidly alternated between appalled and secret-giggliness. I'm still surprised that it managed to suck me in so much that I gagged. Really impressive Mr. Welsh! Thank you for that novel experience! <3

The ending of the novel wasn't at all surprising - in that, I had definitely listed the "big reveal" high on my list of possibilities - and the way in which it ended, after the reveal, was the only way I could envision it ending... but I admit to being somewhat surprised that it actually did end that way.

So, all in all, a satisfying read, but not one that will linger in my mind for too long, despite my enjoyment of it.

After finishing that, I immediately dove back into the Nodame Cantabile manga. I quite enjoyed the build-up and climax of the angst/confusion/conflict and was quite satisfied with several moments. Those moments where the best action to take is to pause, move away and do something else for a few minutes because the delicious feelings of angst, worry, anticipation, hope, etc., are all roiling within you -- but if you immediately continue reading, the continuing plot will sweep all of those emotions away.

Sometimes I lament that some storytellers don't know how to sustain a feeling of anticipation and anxiety to delay their peak. If the climax comes to soon, it's not as fun, now is it?

I had a wonderful sense of almost when the scanlations I had stopped just 2 chapters before the final end of the series. I had a few minutes of wailing and bemoaning and fluttering about (to which Judy can testify) before I thought to look for those last chapters in another location. Having found them and read them, I was satisfied by the end (and sad that it's over) -- but grateful for that pregnant pause.

(Though I've heard that a follow-up series was supposed to have started December 10th. I guess I'll have to wait and see.)

Read several volumes' worth of Nodame Cantabile again yesterday, and I think I fell asleep pretty early which is just sad. But in any case, I've gotten past the part where the anime stops, so it's all new territory from here on in. Though nothing has happened just yet which has elicited much of a reaction -- so far it has mostly been build-up to an elusive something.

As for the Welsh book (BSotMS) I'm reading... Welsh really has a talent for making you sympathize with the antihero protagonist. Which, of course, he deftly does in all the books I've read by him. I barely even care for the more traditionally "nice" guy - the pseudo-rival - a much more sympathetic character than is the protagonist.

The protagonists of these novels aren't much different from one another, and it's likely that it's Welsh's voice for the young, working class Scots coming through more than the character's own (though there are some differences between Mark Renton, from Trainspotting, and Danny Skinner, the protagonist of this book). I do so enjoy the elements of Welsh's writing that are so him.

I started reading the Nodame Cantabile manga (visit stoptazmo.com!), and so far it seems the anime stuck very close to the manga while slightly glossing over certain parts. None of which was really so significant that it had to be shown.

mild spoilers ahead )

I'm also currently reading Irvine Welsh's The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs. It's interesting and entertaining and very much in the vein of his other novels, like Trainspotting and its sequel Porno. That is, dominated by the question of the working class and Scottish national identity... and as one critic said, "full of what Welsh does best -- sex, drugs, and drink." There is an interesting twist, however, in that there's an element of the supernatural/magical realism(?) in it which I don't think Welsh has ever really included in his other works. (Discovered that he does use it in several of his novels, just not in the ones I've read. After reading the Wiki on him, I think I should read his novel Filth next.)

I've been thinking about how I think about novels/films/etc. lately, and I've come to the conclusion that although I do analyze stories in certain ways, I'm not thinking quite critically enough. This is a sad realization. Where possible, I'm trying to prompt myself into thinking critically from different angles, but it's difficult. I feel like I should challenge myself to a book report, or at least the outline of one, and then look up critical essays to compare my thoughts to.

I think my brain is dissolving into something kind of... boring.

A couple of books I've meant to post about recently.

in which I use an LJ cut to spare you on the length of my reviews, but would be sad if you didn't read anyway )

And last, but no where near least, I finished all 16 (as of yet US-released) volumes of Whistle!.

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

The anime stuck very closely to the manga plot, aside from introducing Kojima earlier in the anime than manga, which didn't really affect all that much. HOWEVER! There's quite a bit more in the manga during the time when Kazamatsuri is at the 4-day training camp for the select team. Characters are fleshed out a bit more. And you get to see Kazamatsuri working harder than you do in the anime (which I didn't think would be possible without him dying), but also working smarter too! He also gets advice and/or help from other characters, like Fujishirou (of Musashinomori). It's really cool to see those parts. There's also a part where another line or two reveals more about Shige's personality than in the anime. And it really touched a chord in me -- it was something I totally identify with. I didn't think I could possibly love Whistle! more, but I do. I really, really do.

It really annoys me, however, that VIZ felt the need to have everyone refer to each other by their first names. I keep trying to think of their last names as I read their first names, but I forget after a while. I refuse to refer to them by their first names. Absolutely refuse.

Also, I never realized that Whistle!'s mangaka is a woman. But yeah. Which makes SO MUCH SENSE!
