Anime Boston con report: Thursday
Apr. 25th, 2004 01:22 amThis con was unlike any other I've been to so far. Maryann slept over on Wednesday night and we met the next morning to take the $10 bus to Boston from Chinatown. We basically lined up and eventually got on the bus without a hitch. The bus wasn't too bad although the seats were pretty uncomfortable. The real story starts when we arrived in Boston.
A good two-thirds of the passengers were off the bus when a woman established herself in front of the open door to the bus and started going on about how we shouldn't use this bus company, they're illegal, etc., etc. And she wouldn't let anyone else off the bus. Unfortunately for us, Liz andYoshi Antoine were still on the bus, right behind her in fact. I'm pretty sure we started out by asking her to get out of the way to let my sister off the bus, but she wouldn't budge and anytime anyone so much as came near her (much less touch her), she started screaming that she was going to call the police and file for assault or some such nonsense. Of course, this was a lot more intense than I'm describing it here... I know that when she still refused to move out of the way, Angelica got very mad and started screaming at her to let Liz off the fucking bus. I swear, if I hadn't been there to hold her back, she would've either clawed that woman to death or burst the blood vessels in her face. As it was, she was pretty close to doing just that, not to mention it sounded like she was going to go hoarse any second (more from rage than anything else). I argued pretty calmly with the woman for a few more minutes (she kept saying I didn't have any right to touch her whenever I would reach for Liz, and I kept saying that she had no right to prevent people from getting off the bus), and tried to take some video of the whole thing, just in case, but didn't realize that I'd only got a few seconds recorded when I pushed the button to stop recording by mistake. Anyway, when it was obvious she still wouldn't be moving, I got serious. I just reached past her and started pulling on Liz's bookbag strap, pulling her toward me, off the bus. I didn't realize I'd started recording again (you might guess that I was more involved with other things at the moment), so I got a bit of me "on tape" saying to Liz, "I know you don't want to [push past her, that is], but she isn't going to move." If Liz hadn't come off the bus when I pulled her, it wouldn't have been long before I punched that stupid bitch.
So.
Both Angelica and I were both shaking with rage and other things (adrenaline, I'm sure) when we were all together again.
And, of course, why didn't Antoine push his way past? He's a 23-year old guy, he could've gotten past her. And she must've been a real idiot to do that when there was a woman with her 9-year old daughter on the bus whom she also refused to let off. When I finally pulled Liz off the bus, I told the woman that she was going to have to just push past her because she wasn't going to move. A few seconds later, she did just that.
Oh, you don't know how much I wished it had been me who was stuck behind her. First of all, it's not like I couldn't have pushed past her. She was big, but so am I and if she was going to physically prevent me from going past, then I was going to fucking file for assault! Or if somehow she prevented that, I was just imagining "tripping" off the bus steps to fall right on her. That would've moved her. Stupidfuckingcocksucking1500othercursesIcannotarticulateatthemomentbitch!
Right.
But I was calm. It was Angelica I was worried about. She gets physical way too easily for her own good.
::blows out breath::
Later that day. We'd checked into the (reeeeally small) room (one queen bed... 6 people); well, it's the price you pay when you're trying to save money on hotel costs. There was me, Liz, Angelica, Maryann, Yoshi and his friend from Otakon, Antoine. Oh, but that was a big mistake. Antoine was the most annoying person you could possibly have as a roommate. I don't think I ever posted about our roommate Risa for Yaoicon 2003 -- she was pretty bad, rude; always interrupting conversations and not even noticing, much less apologizing for it, among other annoyances. But Antoine was worse. At least Risa was straight, so I didn't have to worry about her trying to hit on me. Antoine... yech. Annoying, desperate, trying to be part of our group. That in itself is not something to be annoyed at, I understand it's hard to hang out with a group of friends that are already close, but he just didn't know how to relax. He tried to hard, and then he kept not-so-subtly hitting on basically all of us girls. It was pretty pathetic. I'm not a touchy sort of person (as in, I don't really like to physically touch people much), but with people I know and am comfortable with, I touch them more naturally... so, I'm pretty comfortable with Yoshi, so maybe Antoine thought since we were all touchy-touchy, he could get in on the touchy-touchy stuff too? But that's just disgusting (to me, anyway... the thought is... puke-invoking). I know, this makes it sound like you should feel sorry for him, but it was like having a stalker who's living with you. It's creepy and eewwww.
After a while of settling in and fooling around in the room, we went out to eat. There was a Penang (Malaysian restaurant) in the Chinatown there, so we went. It was a little overpriced (but not as bad as the one on the Upper West side, here in Manhattan), but the food wasn't as good as the one in our Chinatown, or even the one in Elmhurst (which isn't great), but I still think it was better than the food in the one on the Upper West side.
After getting back to the hotel, we got our badges and stuff, then went back to the room. I was still itching to go out and do something, and I'd found a place (online via citysearch.com) that was a 24-hour bowling and billiards place (Boston Bowl) that was about 4 miles away. I figured we'd take a cab, have some fun. We tried to find a minivan cab, but none were around when you need them, so we hailed a cab for Angelica, Maryann and Liz, and then one for me, Yoshi, and ::ugh:: Antoine. Our cab ride cost $18, which was more than I was really expecting, but of course, it was too late by then to turn back. When we got there, I expected to see them waiting for us since they'd left first, but they weren't there. I called Angelica's cell phone and she told me that their cab driver was lost and pretending he wasn't. LOL, poor them. She asked how much our ride was and basically gave the driver that much. When they finally got to the pool hall, we all got a pool table (I hate bowling), got into teams and started playing. Yoshi had never played before, so he was understandably very bad. Antoine had played before, but was disproportionately boastful of his non-prowess and lording it slightly over Yoshi. And he would not stop saying "You got served," every two. damn. seconds. Anytime anyone didn't sink a ball (which was often 'cause Angelica and I are the best and we aren't so talented or anything), he would say it. Over. And over. And over. Again. It was driving us all insane. Eventually, I said something, asked him to stop saying it, but he kept on. What a headache. After two hours of playing a few very slow games, we had 10 minutes left on the clock and Angelica and I played a solo game. It was quick and really fun. By that time, I'd gotten much better (I always start out bad and get better the more I play), so I was just having so much fun getting my shots in and everything. And the thing I love about playing pool with Angelica, is that she's a decisive shot. I get so impatient when I have to wait for the person to decide what shot to make, then five minutes later when they've completely adjusted their stick, body, and whatever else... it's because I want to get back to my shooting. But I also don't want to play by myself. So playing with Angelica is the best. Oh, and poor Yoshi. He's so stiff (not in a hentai way). I don't know how he can be Spanish. He's whiter than I am. I'd say he's still in that coltish phase of his body (he's tall and lanky), hasn't grown into his skin yet... but then he's so good in playing DDR, so I don't know.
Long story short (too late, I know). We took cabs home. Same groups. This time, the girl group got the quick ride ($14 and about as many minutes, going maybe about 55mph on sidestreets, for shame), and our group got the not-slow-enough-to-be-running-up-the-meter, self-proclaimed tour guide ("and this is the Boston Commons...") for $20.
One damn good thing about Boston, it's actually open til respectable hours! Some of the restaurants were open til 11pm-1am (depending on the day), and there was a 7-11 that was only closed 3-6am. So since we were all a bit hungry, we got some food nuked at the 7-11 and went back to the room. I'd say we were all asleep (Yoshi, Maryann & Angelica in the bed, Antoine on the floor on one side of the bed, Liz & I on the floor on the other side of the bed) by 3am.
