Date: 2003-01-16 02:19 am (UTC)Hey, I need to ask you about something. I joined Saikou Fansubs so I could download SDK (I've only seen up to episode 7, at Ohayocon). I got many episodes from their site, but I need to go to IRC to get the rest. I know how to get to IRC, but what do I do when I get there? I didn't see any instructions anywhere. I hate being clueless....

Date: 2003-01-16 07:58 am (UTC)Well, that's a no-brainer! (It also happens to be my favorite!) ^_~
Warning: LONG explanation ahead! (Cut into 2 posts because LJ wouldn't let me post it as one.)
About IRC... it's simple and complex at the same time. And I admit I might not be the best person to ask, since I have a love-hate relationship (1:9 ratio) with IRC. If you've already dl'd the program, you might want to check out the general FAQ, which you can find here.
Aside from that, basically you have to register your tag/ID, which I'm assuming is going to be "zerotwofan"...
In the "Options" button (2nd from left), you want to either pick the server you want to connect to, or create a new one. Saikou Fansubs is on the irc.enterthegame.com server (as are many digisubbers). Once you're on that server, you can go to the "Channels folder" button (3rd from left) and add a channel. Every channel has a "#" in front of its name. For example, Saikou Fansubs' channel is "#saikou-fansubs". For this particular channel, you don't need a password to get it, although in some channels you do. You can also search for a channel by keyword (in its title) by typing /list *keyword into the status window. Alternatively, you can click the "list channels" button (4th from left) and do a search through that dialog window.
Once you're in a channel.... (see next post
IRC: part 2
Date: 2003-01-16 07:58 am (UTC)The problem with IRC is that you almost always have to leave your computer on for a long time because (1) it takes quite a while to actually find what you're looking for (if it isn't newly released), (2) once you find it, you're probably 10th in queue, so you have to wait until all the people in front of you finish dl'ing their stuff before you can, and (3) since what you're looking for are episodes, the file sizes are 150mb+, which means dl times are very long. Which means if you're 10th in queue, you may have to wait a day or more before you can start dl'ing. Also, you cannot leave the channel of the person whose queue you're on, otherwise you'll lose your spot.
For all this, I recommend WinMX, which is much the same in terms of dl'ing time, but at least it's more straightforward: it's like Napster was, you just search and dl. You may be in queue for a day or so, but you don't have to waste all the time looking through fserv upon fserv for what you want.
*However, in this case, I have all the episodes of SDK on VCD, so if you'd like I'll make you a copy of what you need. I know you have a DVD player, so it won't be a problem for you to watch them on that, or on your computer (if you have a DVD-ROM drive).
Sorry this was so long, but IRC is a bit complicated. Of course, it gets easier once you know what you're doing, but I just can't bring myself to waste all that time on it. ::shrugs:: And I hope that if you do decide to go with IRC, this helped a bit!
