osarabaI finished Crime School by Carol O'Connell on Tuesday night. Wow, that was really great! There's nothing like the image of thousands of flies and cockroaches crawling in, out, and around a two-day old corpse in the middle of a heat wave in August in NYC. Really beautiful imagery! I loved it. But that's just me.
This book seemed to almost go back to the same tone as the first two in the Kathy Mallory series, for which I'm decidedly grateful. I didn't like the last few books all that much, even though I love Mallory. In Crime School, more of Mallory's checkered past is revealed, but bit by painstakingly litte bit. What a drawn-out, tortuous process, but if you're into anticipation -- which I am -- you'll love O'Connell for making you wait.
I thought everyone was a lot cooler in this book: Mallory, Riker, a cop named Janus (or something like that) was really cool, and a newbie detective kid named Duck Boy was by turns really stupid and annoying, and too cute for words! I hope O'Connell brings his character back in the next one...
I went to Barnes & Noble on Wednesday to see if David Weber's War of Honor had come out yet, and it had! I'm so glad I finished Crime School the night before, otherwise I might not have stopped by to look for War of Honor. And that would've been bad, because the only reason I bought the book is because B&N had it for 30% off because it's on the bestseller list. Whew! Instead of paying $28, I only paid $19 and change! I never could have bought it at the regular price. And guess what? I went back yesterday (only one day later), and they'd moved all the War of Honor hardcovers off of the 30% off/bestseller rack and into the sci-fi section. So I basically got it just in the nick of time!
