Otakon or bust?

So after 10 years of faithful attendance at Otakon, this year, potentially to be year eleven, is the one in which I will not be going. It feels crazy and weird and wrong to not go, but there are a few things which just naturally point in that direction for this year.

A little higher up on my travel priorities right now are Berlin (sometime before 2nd week in August) as I mentioned previously, and Vancouver (theoretically over Thanksgiving).

The other two cons that I'm planning on attending this year are Dragon*Con and possibly Wincon. D*C's "cheap rate" deadline is coming up (end of the week!) and I've got to shell out the $80 for that. Wincon's second pre-reg deadline is at the end of the month, but is $100.

I'm less sure about Wincon, truthfully, because I don't know anyone in the fandom all that well (except for you two) and... well. Not that I wouldn't have a good time, but in light of the lack of connections, and not wanting to do the *I DON'T KNOW ANYONE, LET ME CLING TO YOU* thing... the cost might be prohibitive? (But the potential for going to a Blackhawks game! DO WANT!)

Sigh. I'm just going back and forth, thinking aloud now. Why is this so difficult!

Anyway, back to the point: I'm not going to Otakon this year. Neither are Liz or Juliet. And probably not Maryann either, come to think of it. What is up with that?!

SO SAD. ;_;

As to WinCon, it's multi-fandom. And I don't think you'd have any problem meshing. :D

I know, I'm keeping in mind the multi-fandom thing. Oh you know, I should've asked you before -- how many people attend? I realize it's a small con, but any guesses on the numbers?

Anywhere from 80 - 150, depending on the year and location. I may or may not be in the market for a con roommate. BTW.

Okay, that IS really small. The smallest con I've done was 220-ish people and I was part of the staff, and working the whole damn time. =D

When do you think you'd know about the roomie situation? I'll have to make up my mind about Wincon by the end of the month as I definitely can't afford the $125 reg.

Not that the roomie thing is the only factor, I was just wondering when you'd know. =D

I always make comments about how I'm not going this year, and then I go. So.

Plus, I think I want to go one or two days early so I can maybe hang with the Chi-town hockey peeps.

You should go to the Creation SPN con in Parsippany. DC and I are going on Saturday and Sunday. It's in July. I'm excited just because Misha Collins is going to be there. ^_^

We'll miss you guys at Otakon this year. Is Angelica still going to be there?

Angelica is definitely still going to Otakon.

And hmmm, I will keep the Parsippany con in mind -- maybe as a one-day thing. I assume you and DC will be driving there and back each day? Or will you be staying overnight?

Yep, we're going for the day and driving back home at night. Parsippany is only about an hour away from where we live. We got the Silver tickets, so we have guaranteed seats. It was a lot less expensive than getting the Gold package, but less risky than getting general admission. I'd be sad if I didn't get to hear Misha's presentation.

Hopefully we'll hook up with you on Labor Day weekend. We still plan to be at OTP Con. ^_^

OH NOES! Link had contacted me about OTP Con but I told her I'm going to be at Dragon*Con over Labor Day weekend. ;_; I wasn't sure if it was definitely on for then -- I'm going to be SO SAD to miss that too!

Dragon*Con win! If my place of employment doesn't attempt to screw me over more than it already has (I would have loved to take the train down from Penn to Atlanta like I did last year - such a wonderfully scenic ride!, didn't get Wednesday before Labor Day off this time around) I will see you there. :)

Oh really? Didn't know you wouldn't be going! But YAY for Carrie! Is she selling stuff or just going for fun/masquerade? And not Mario either? I'm kind of surprised!

3) Last year's Otakon was severly MEH. And seeing how much they want for badges, nothing of value lost.
