Yaoi-con Itinerary: day two of four.
Oct. 30th, 2002 04:22 pmFRIDAY
Friday we got up relatively early and set out for Japan Town, since the con registration wasn’t to begin until 4pm. Actually, first we went to have breakfast at a 50’s style diner down the block. OMG, it was way too expensive for the food they gave. I mean, I know stuff is going to be overpriced, but usually they give a nice amount of food to make up for it. Not at this place. A 3-egg western omelette (ham, green & red peppers, onions) cost $6.95! And they didn’t even cook the stuff with the eggs. It was sort of a 3-egg omelette folded around the other stuff. I was so not going to pay $7 for an omelette. Angelica got this, but I got $5 french toast. It wasn’t so bad. I knew I’d be hungry relatively quickly, but I was determined not to spend an obscene amount of money on breakfast. The $1.75 soda was worth it, though, because it was refillable. That was nice.
I asked the clerk where Japan Town was and he pointed us 5 blocks away. So we started in that direction. Hills. Hills. And more hills. Last time I was in SF, I was in a car. It was much more amusing traversing the hills in a vehicle. But we made it.
Walking down a hill. (Look at Nicky’s cool Kenshin leather jacket!)
Walking down the same hill. (Look at my bright red hair… weird, huh?)
And five really long blocks later we entered the Kinokuniya building. We went into a store called Asakichi which had Japanese antiques as novelty gifts. It was actually quite nice, and I was going to get something for my mom there, but I thought I’d look around some more, and ended up never getting back to the place. ;_; But the “mall” had beautiful indoor landscaping.
Looking up the steps.
Looking up the steps. (Look, there’s Nicky.)
We went up to the second level where Kinokuniya is and spent a while in there. While we were looking at some of the shoujo manga, I spotted this really kirei Asian guy with a purple streak in his slightly-long black hair. He was wearing leather pants and a long black jacket (one that looks like it should be a tuxedo jacket with coattails, but doesn’t actually have coattails). Suteki na bishounen.
Anyway. I dragged Angelica over to get a good look and she and Nicky proceeded to follow him around for a few mintues. Later, when we left Kinokuniya (me with the latest volume of Kare Kano) we saw the kirei guy sitting right outside the Kinokuniya… and at this time (while Nicky was blatantly taking a picture) I wondered if he was Shiki (the guy Yaoi-con would be using for the bishounen drawing session). Later, it would turn out that he was. ::sigh::
Angelica’s bad-angle & blurry shot of Shiki.
After the Kinokuniya building, there were two other small malls that we went through, which were connected by a skywalk. (We ran into Shiki a few other times… obviously, he was following us.)
More nice indoor landscaping.
I have to hand it to the Japanese, they have beautiful landscaping designs.
We went through the other two malls pretty quickly, and outside to Port Street, where there were a lot of Japanese restaurants, markets, and other places of business. My mom asked me to take a few scenery shots; these were really the best I could do. Really. We were rather fortunate that it was a really beautiful, sunny day outside.

We all went into one of the Japanese markets, looking for munchies to bring back to the room. There wasn’t anything really simple, but Nicky and I split the cost of a box of giant strawberry pocky. Mmmm. I really love strawberry pocky; I’m one of those few that don’t like chocolate that much, so chocolate pocky (which everyone goes nuts over) doesn’t do anything for me. But strawberry pocky…. yum. And the giant pocky was actually really good! ^_~ I was pleased. There were 20 in the box, so it would’ve been 10 for Nicky, 10 for me, but she had about 5 or 6 and forgot the rest when she left on Sunday, so I gave the rest of her share to Liz when I got home.
I think we got back to the room around 1 or so. Ange had gone farther into SF to site-see, but the rest of us went back to the hotel. On the way, we stopped by a deli/liquor store and Angelica and I bought sandwiches while Nicky bought bourbon (Wild Turkey 101). At the room, we ended up talking about a variety of things, among which we ended up on living expenses in NYC and SF, of all things. The sandwiches were delicious, as was the Wild Turkey, and the にごりさけ(unfiltered sake) that Nicky had brought with her from Sacramento. I’ve had other sake before, and it was no where near as good as the nigori.
3:30 quickly came around and we went down to get on the registration line. It ended up being delayed until 5pm, and so we were waiting on line for quite a while. I think we finally got our badges around 6? After which we went to play Yaoi Pictionary. Or rather, Angelica went to play, I to watch, but I got dragged onto another team one round in. (I really didn’t enjoy that, and as soon as I spotted someone else who wanted to play, I let her take my place.) The guy hosting the game, though, was really nice and sweet (from what I could tell).
We then hung out for about an hour with DC in her room… that was loads of fun! We got to tell her all about the G-boys’ past lives as waterbugs, the Weiß-boys’ past lives as waterbugs, Youji’s current pet cat named Aya who persistently hunts a mouse that lives in the apartment, whom Youji so adeptly named Schwarz, and last, but certainly not least – my in-the-works fic idea for a 1x2x1 that’s sappy and romantic (bleh), but at the end Rashid (or as Angelica and I, and the Project X fansubs we have, call him: La Sheed) runs by in a harem girl outfit. (NOTE: I’m copyrighting this damn fic idea; no one else can take it! I have to try and get off of my lazy ass to finish it for Sharon’s Moments of Rapture contest.)
Around 8:15, Angelica and I went out for pizza down the block, and got back just in time for J-rock panel at 9. When we got there, they were playing Malice Mizer PVs. I’m going to have to ask Christine to make me a copy of that MM PV tape next time she goes home ‘cause Angelica wants a copy of the full-length Illuminati PV. The one that we have at the end of the Merveilles concert is a shorter version; it’s missing some of the scenes. We met Alma, who was running the J-rock panel. Angelica had promised to bring her a copy of MM’s last live with Tetsu, and something of B-T’s. I couldn’t very well bring a copy of their PVs because that would scare people away – most of their PVs (especially the early ones) are really scary. So I brought a copy of their One Life, One Death CUT UP tour.
It was quite painful when people began to leave the viewing room around the second song in. Not that I don’t understand – B-T is just on the other side of the visual kei border. Which means that their lives are a bit boring in comparison to visual bands like MM, and Gackt’s pop antics like dancing cats and humping on stage. Anyway, I myself left after a few songs (drooling over Atsushi all the while) to go to the “Living Vicariously: Are You Seme or Uke?” panel. But the panel was a bit boring and we could hear the panel next door laughing through the walls, so we went next door to the “Guilty Pleasures” panel (which I could only remember as the “Kinks” panel until Angelica refreshed my memory).
There, we found everyone – Sharon, Jana, DC, I believe Susan (but I’m not positive). A lively discussion ensued – especially when Jana started talking to us about her masturbation kink. She loves 1x1 and 2x2. So do I; I think we must both be voyeurs. Sharon admitted she has a “romance” kink, which is really adorable, not to mention 100% true.
You’ll never guess, though, what I found out at this panel! The moderator was the same guy as the one who’d been running Pictionary and I was curious as to who he was. So I looked at his badge for his name, thinking I might recognize him or something. I also had this vague idea – since he’d been so nice in both place – that if the opportunity came up, I wouldn’t necessarily shy away from calling attention to myself (like I usually do). Right. So I looked at his badge. Guess who? The very same Volunteer Coordinator who I replaced on the Yuricon staff! Can you believe it? I wish I had a picture of my face the moment I recognized his name. Probably that perfect anime stunned expression. Then I started laughing and whispered to Angelica what I’d just discovered. From that point on, every time I saw him I would just read his name again and start cracking up all over again.
After that panel, we hung out and talked for a bit longer, but we soon ended up back in the room, talking with our roomies (keeping them up), drinking sake and bourbon, and finally falling asleep.
