Old friends, new earrings.

I feel like it's been so long since I last posted. And, in fact, it has. I miss the days when I was posting more often -- I guess it was this summer. ^_~
A few nice things happened this week: Leo (
sirleo81) came over my house on Tuesday morning. Although we both go to NYU, I haven't seen him in a long time, and we've been friends since junior high! You know, I never realized it, but I've known him just as long as I've known Angelica. Weird, huh? In fact, Angelica and I introduced him to David Weber's Honor Harrington series (of which he's now a faithful fan, just like us). So I told him over AIM (we talk over AIM every so often) that I'd read the latest in the series, War of Honor, and that it's really good, etc., etc. He mentioned that he'd probably buy a copy because he'd bought a copy of the one before that, Ashes of Victory. I took the opportunity to ask him if he'd like to buy my only-read-once copy, complete with the promotional CD-ROM it came with, which includes all of the Honor Harrington series, plus some extras... all for the discounted price of $20 (almost 30% off the cover price)! Later, I explained to him that, with his contribution, he was oh-so-kindly purchasing my 7-day unlimited Metrocard for that week. =D
So he said he was interested, but for some reason, the deal included an introduction to sake. I don't remember how that came about. But since Angelica had planned on buying the nigori sake that we'd had in San Francisco, I was pleased to offer him some of that. It finally came about that he would stop by on Tuesday morning to have a look at my (relatively) new house, pick up the book, and have some sake. And all before noon! It was actually quite nice. And I got to show off my pretty piercings in person! That was cool, too. Angelica came over to do the honors of pouring her sake (which, for some reason, is being kept at my house), and to say hi to our friend whom we rarely see.
They stayed for about 45 minutes, until they both had to leave in order to be on time for classes. So it was cool. The only thing I keep beating myself up over is that I completely forgot to take a few pics of Leo! Waaa! I really wanted to take a few pics; I even had my camera out to do so, but I left it upstairs when the doorbell rang! How baka is that!
Speaking of War of Honor, though... When I was about half-way through the book, I caught a glimpse on someone's blog about their opinion of the latest Honor book, and was a bit stunned and turned-off at the same time. She said that the only thing that saved the book was how much it went over to the Peeps' side, and went on about how much she disliked Honor and thought she was an idiot, along with White Haven, not to mention giving away the fact that (highlight to view slight spoiler) due to complications and surprises in Honor and White Haven's relationship, at the very end of the book, you find out that she cannot block out White Haven's feelings when she's in his presence. That is, it overpowers everyone else's emotions she'd been receiving... but only in his presence. AND, Honor indicates that it's just a problem she's going to have to work on, like she worked on adjusting to being able to feel others' emotions when it first started happening. (end of spoiler) That last part was not something the person specified when she complained about it. Which really pissed me off. Because, although I don't love Honor and White Haven's feelings toward each other, I don't hate it, either... and it just sounded like it was going to be something really biased, like straight out of a romance novel (I know, I've read hundreds of romance novels), and I really hated the prospect. But I just couldn't understand how the person could dislike Honor so much. I mean, she's so cool; she's what the whole series is all about! I can understand why she loves the Peeps, I love them too -- Theisman and his former StateSec spy are two of my favorite characters -- but how can anyone dislike Honor? Especially in this book?! The parts with the Peeps annoyed the hell out of me, mostly because of Giancola's political maneuvering, and the only parts I enjoyed without feeling trepidation were the parts with Honor!
::gets off soapbox::
But did you know, I read an interview with David Weber, and he indicated that there may be an Honor movie or tv-show in the works -- wouldn't that be amazing? Of course, it would also be of some cause for concern because of the worry that it'd be hacked to pieces. Hopefully, Weber would have some sort of input to make it more accurate, in hopes that it would end up more like Interview with the Vampire, rather than Queen of the Damned. In addition, Weber said that the actress he'd choose to play Honor would be an asian-looking Sigourney Weaver with Linda Hamilton's physique from T2.
Okay, enough of Honor.
I've been waiting for my niobium CBRs to come in the mail from tribalectic.com. Well, they came today. But I apparently mis-measured the diameter of the rings that I wanted; I ordered 3/8" instead of 7/16"... which means that the diameter is the same as the CBRs I'd already had in my lobes, when I really wanted the new ones to match the diameter of the ones in my cartilage. I was going to exchange them (since I hadn't yet removed the CBRs from their sterile packaging), but there's a 25% restocking fee. I wouldn't have minded that so much (even though it'd come to about an extra $20), but I figured I'm probably going to get more earrings sometime (relatively) soon, so there's no point in spending the $20 now.
I got 18-gauge CBRs for my 2nd and 3rd holes in both ears, and 16ga CBRs for my 1st holes in both ears. All of the ones in my left ear went in fine; the 2nd and 3rd holes in my right ear went in fine. But apparently, the 1st hole in my right ear hadn't stretched as much as the one in my left, so the 16ga CBR stretched the hole a bit when I put it in. It wasn't painful, but it was a snug fit and so it's offers a bit of resistance when I turn the ring in my ear. Luckily, I didn't even try to get a 14ga in either of the holes -- I've never worn heavy earrings, so they haven't stretched all that much in the 10 years I've had them. It looks like if I want to work my way up to a 14ga in either of the holes, I'll have to start tugging on my earrings. And I have yet to decide whether I want to go up to a 16ga in my 2nd and 3rd holes. It's a tough decision.
But in any case, here are pics of my new earrings. I have a black bead that I wanted to put in the middle CBR on my left ear, but I cannot, for the life of me, get the bead off of that CBR! I think it might be a fixed-bead CBR. Either that, or it was put on so tightly with earring pliers that I can't open up the ring at all! So I'm going to have to go to a piercing place and have them change the stainless steel bead to my black bead 'cause I want the beads on the upper part of my left ear to alternate: silver, black (star), silver, black. Oh, and I think you can see more clearly in the pic of my right ear, that the CBRs are black niobium with silver beads.

Re:
Date: 2002-11-24 02:30 pm (UTC)LOL, I actually do get this question a lot. My standard answer is: Yes, it hurts. However, what it feels like is a sort of painful 2-second pinch. After that, it doesn't hurt. What hurts is the aftercare. Most people don't know what a bitch aftercare can be. At first, it might hurt to turn the earring, and you might have crusties around the hole, so you have to be careful that you've soaked the crusties off, etc., before turning the earring in your ear, otherwise you may risk tearing the skin inside the hole. You also have to be careful to clean it about twice a day with a mild antibacterial soap.
So, while the aftercare doesn't actually hurt, per se, it is a lot of work, and you have to take that into account. Many people get pierced, then when the holes get infected because they haven't been taking proper care of them, they take out the earring and let the hole close up because -- trapping the infection inside instead of letting the infection drain out!
You can see that on my right ear, the barbell piercings are not completely healed yet, but that's not unusual... and I've been taking care of it... kinda. ^_~
But I find my piercings too pretty to even consider that the pain wasn't worth it! ^_~
