From the press release:
In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. The Dark Knight Rises is slated for release on July 20, 2012.

*grin* You mean, besides the potential for Brokeback Mountain quips? There was a whole storyline that culminated in Bane breaking Batman's back.

And there's just a sackful of dirty one-liners there, now that I think on it. Obviously I need more coffee so I can find the strength to pull myself out of the gutter.

Yes, read the Wiki entry. but simply put; Bane broke Batman's spine making him a paraplegic for a while.
Hopefully they give Bane his dues. They completely RUINED him in the old franchise.

Yeah, according to DH Bane is a serious villain in the comics. He was also really hard to beat in the Arkham Asylum game. Apparently he's not just a big brainless muscley dude, he's also very intelligent. So I think Tom Hardy is a good fit, and either way I know I'm seeing it opening weekend.

I am excite! I looooove Bane in the animated series; he's nothing at all like Batman & Robin Bane. I'm basically imagining a super-smart, genius tactician version of Bronson.

In other words: muuuuscles and smartz.

Oh, my poor Batsy, though. *protects him*

I am so excited about this. In my mind I'm like building it up for the epic of epicness. Like after the Dark Knight I've so much hope for this franchise, I truly believe Nolan is going to stay so close to canon Bane which will make this all sorts of awesome.

The "meh" feelings I had when I realized "The Dark Knight Rises" was actually going to be the title of the movie have been replaced by OMFGYAY! I really, really hope that they keep his character around long enough for his transformation from the bad guy to kind of an anti-hero after he kicks his addiction to venom. Because seeing Tom Hardy playing that sort of role would Blow. My. Mind!

...And my ovaries.

I'm by no means an expert on the Batman comics so I could be completely wrong here; I don't think he has an alter-ego exactly because he was raised in a prison and didn't really have another identity, and in the comics he was mostly around only when he's fighting/being evil. However since the movie's far more likely to show Bane plotting on his own and interacting with Batman (and since Nolan is a genius who knows how very pleasing Tom Hardy is to look at) I'm guessing he'll be out of the mask some of the time. (Especially if we see him working out/being badass king of the prison at the beginning *drools*)

After 21 comments, I've noticed a severe lack of pro-Anne Hathaway posts. I have now officially remedied that. Her bizarreness in Wonderland proved to me she could break "cookie cutter" mode, so I have faith in her channeling Ms. Selina Kyle. Oh yeah, and she's HAWT! And no, those were not my ovaries that exploded.

And on the Bane front, his whole goal was to "break" Batman physically AND psychologically. He made Batman snap mentally, and THEN busted the spine simply to "kick him while he's down." That beautiful manipulative bastard.

Whoops, my mind is going back to Anne Hathaway. I'll see where this takes me.
