Oh, don't get me wrong, I LOVE LOVE LOVE first-time fic too! Basically, I'm a whore for well-written fic, no matter what, pretty much! =D But maybe it's somehow more satisfying to find well-written ER fic because-- it's harder to find, and also possibly YOU CAN KEEP GOING FOREVER WITH IT AHAHAHAHAHA. /insanity
But also, yes! I tend not to ship truly canon pairings too, just because, well, there's usually less to explore there. (Of course this doesn't apply 100% of the time, just the majority.)
Oh but yes, please do read gyzym's fic. I neglected to mention it is a first-time fic in the beginning, I guess. But the really really good stuff (IMO) is the ER part, so yeah.
