I don't normally talk about watching The Mentalist because it doesn't really make me squee in a fannish way. I enjoy the show almost completely for Patrick Jane (what's the actor's name again? Simon something?) as he's a different sort of take on Sherlock Holmes, but with all the flippancy and impudence that makes him so highly entertaining.

I haven't been at all involved in fandom for this show (if there even is any?) because I don't see any interesting (and believable) pairings in it, with either of the two characters I'm at all interested in (Jane and Cho -- whom I wouldn't realistically slash together). BUT. With season three's introduction of Hightower (I don't even remember her first name, much less her title)... well, at first she wasn't too much on my radar, but with episode 3x15 "Red Gold", I realized HOW AWESOME HIGHTOWER/JANE COULD BE! \o/

She's so badass and so in control of herself, yet clearly has a lot going on under that. And she acknowledges Jane's abilities without being annoyed by them in the way that Lisbon is-- she questions why he does things but accepts his answers when they make sense rather than only getting caught up on the rudeness factor. She also seems a lot more in touch with her motivations and emotions than other characters on the show... yeah, I guess she's more mature. And she is totally snarky back to Jane, and Jane-- I don't know if he's holding back because there's difference in rank between them (although that has never stopped him with anyone else), but he's actually respectful of her desire not to discuss certain, private things. Which means, what, he actually respects her? He thinks she's smart enough to handle things without his prodding? (Until, of course, the point where she isn't, but then his prodding is done in a light-handed way.) She makes him stop and think about what he's doing because it's her?

These questions are probably a bit of an overreaction for ONE episode, but what's interesting is that his attitude/behavior toward her is UTTERLY DIFFERENT from how treats everyone else; therefore, is it really an overreaction or a stretch?

I'm not all of a sudden going to turn into a raging fangirl for this show, but it's a little exciting to feel like I can ~imagine~ things for Jane aside from what's in canon. I think I may attempt a snippet or a Five Things fic for this. lkasjdflasjflasjdf!

Poor Cho, though, he'll never get any long-term love interest... and any fic I'd potentially read or write about him would probably be somewhat of a Mary Sue as I'm inordinately in love with him. <3
