Friday Angelica slept over and so Saturday morning I woke up relatively early (8:30am) in order to walk her lazy ass to the bus stop. ^_~ My parents had gone to two doctors appointments.
For lunch, we went to eat at my favorite Malaysian restaurant (Taste Good in Elmhurst), and had some good food. Unfortunately, my father ate something which caused his blood sugar to go up, although we didn't know until a few minutes after he finished eating (it's quite obvious when his blood sugar is too low or too high; he seems like he's drunk -- slurring his words, getting irritated at everything/anything, unable to walk straight, etc.). Oddly enough, it was at this point that among some of the people waiting for tables was my uncle (my father's youngest brother) and his family. Go figure.
So my uncle, Iwan, came over to say hello, and that's when I was able to tell that my father's blood sugar had gone up. It really affected him in a bad way (worse, it seemed, than usual) and I ran out and over to the car to get his diabetic medication (glyburide). I ran back and he took one of the pills and we sat there for a little while longer, until he started to feel like he could walk to the car. While we were waiting, Liz gave me this look and said that it had been really kowai 'cause my father had started crying. I guess it was pretty freaky 'cause I don't think I've ever seen my father cry. Ever. Never.
In any case, after a while, we all helped my father out of the restaurant, but then outside he couldn't really hold himself up to walk, so Iwan and my mom were supporting my father as we walked over to the car.
We went home after that, where I proceeded to spend about four hours online doing absolutely nothing.
Today (or rather, Sunday, but it still feels like "today" to me), I got up around noon (it was soooo nice to sleep in) and we went to Sizzler for lunch. It was actually pretty good; there was no fighting! (Completely impressive.) After which we dropped Liz off at home so she could do her homework. Then my parents and I took a ride in the car for a bit, and then went to the supermarket briefly. My father was feeling so much better today than yesterday. (Apparently, aside from the blood sugar thing during lunch, he'd been sitting up for 10 hours that day, which is much more than he'd been doing for the past few months, so he was exhausted and in pain for most of the day and night.)
After the supermarket, my mom took me out to practice driving. I was completley surprised that it was actually fun -- we didn't fight, or get pissed at each other, or yell, or anything! She didn't act freaked out and nervous like she had a few years ago when I tried to practice then.
I wanted to go back to the area in which I had practiced when I had Driver's Ed in high school (South of Austin Street, around the residential area enclosed within the Metropolitan Avenue/Woodhaven Blvd/Yellowstone Blvd area), to re-familiarize myself with the act of driving. After all, I haven't driven in about 3-4 years now, and Driver's Ed was 5 years ago. So once I got a bit more used to it again, we branched out a bit. Not much, but we did get a solid hour-and-a-half of driving in. Although, technically I shouldn't have been, because we started around 5:20 and it got dark at least half an hour before we called it quits, and by law you're not supposed to drive with a Learner's Permit after dark.
She said that I was handling the car much better than I had a few years ago (smooth gas and brake, turns, etc.), which is sort of weird since I haven't driven between then and now. But I guess I also felt that way.
And I got to drive all the way home from Continental/Queens Blvd via Jewel Avenue, where there's a patch of almost-highway. Granted, it was pretty quiet, but hey, you have to start somewhere, right?
The bad news is that I still might have to take the driving lessons & test anyway before being able to take the road test to get my license. That really sucks, considering that may be another $140-$240, after I've already taken Driver's Ed (for $230). It's because I saw on the DMV website that if your pre-licensing training certificate is more than one year old OR your driver education certificate is more than 2 years old, [you must] make arrangements to take or repeat the pre-licensing training prior to scheduling your road test. The only way this may not be so bad is if "pre-licensing training" only includes the test itself, and NOT the driving lessons; the test only costs $40 to take whereas the lessons cost between $100 and $250.
Angelica said she's going to get the price info from the driving school place near her (where her mom went), and I'm going to have to go to (or call) the DMV to find out about exactly what "pre-licensing training" means, and if I really need to re-take it in order to take the road test, or if my 5-year old Driver's Ed certification will do. Because we know what happened last time I trusted something on the DMV website.
I really don't want to go to work tomorrow.
