I have carebears!
Dec. 21st, 2002 12:51 amI woke up massively late this morning (6:45 when I'm supposed to leave at 6:45), and it completely just set the tone for the day. I took a shower and got dressed and was out the door by 7:05, and I got to work on time. However, I forgot the sake I was supposed to have brought with me so that Angelica and the rest of the gang could have a small Christmas vacation celebration. I called Angelica to let her know, and to suggest that she could stop by my house and get it herself before she came into the city 'cause she has the keys, but since it's a little out of the way, she decided not to. She brought her small (200 ml) bottle of Jack Daniels, instead. Of course, I didn't know that the mini-celebration was going to be held at Hunter College, so that I wouldn't even get to drop in on it for a few minutes, and that was a bit disappointing. Apparently, I assumed too much.
In any case, Angelica and I had lunch together from 2:30 to 3:30. Before I went back to work, though, I stopped by the American Greetings store that's across from GCS. Yesterday, when I was hanging around, waiting for Angelica to get out of work, I stopped into the store in order to look for a Christmas card to send a friend and saw that they had carebears! Stuffed, adorable, irrisistable carebears! They had 6 of them: Cheer, Friendship, Sunshine, Tenderheart, Wish, and Bedtime Bears. (Small sized bears were $6.99, medium sized bears were $12.99; I don't know how much the big sized bears were.)
My favorite (of those) is Friendship Bear 'cause when I was in 1st grade (1986/87), my friend Erin gave me a Friendship Bear mug that was just adorable, and I loved it to death (and was brokenhearted when my mother broke it). I would've gotten the Friendship Bear, except it's color is a sort of washed-out peach. It didn't look as bright and interesting as the other carebears. But I couldn't decide on which of the other carebears to get because they're all so cute and I didn't really like any of them more than the others. So I ended up not getting any.
But today, when I went back into the store with Liz and Angelica, Liz found them adorable too, and then I just couldn't resist. I told her if she could pay for half of them, I'd buy one of each 'cause they were just too adorable to leave! But since I had to go back to work, I just gave her my credit card and left. Later, she came in with a bag from the store and told me that mom had said yes to splitting the cost... I think that's basically Liz's "New Year's/Atheist's Day" present to me. Which is cool - they're just soooo adorable! And then on the train ride into Queens, I found out that Angelica had bought Bedtime Bear. LOL! And she took a pic which I made into my one of my LJ icons. But here's a pic I took after I got home; of all of them... look -- how can you resist?!

Earlier, I'd asked Fay if it would be okay for me to leave an hour early. Angelica, Liz and I planned to go see LOTR: The Two Towers tonight and the only convenient time was at 8:00 in Queens, which is why I had to leave at 6:30, so we'd have time to get on line for good seats. It's a good thing I suggested that Angelica pick up the tickets on her way into the city this afternoon - when we got there at 7 tonight, the 8 o'clock show was already sold out.

I enjoyed the movie on its own. There were quite a few things they changed from the book, but that's not a surprise. The only thing I really disliked about what they changed is how they completely changed Faramir's character! (That's Boromir's brother.) In the words of one enraged fan as we left the theater, "They made Faramir into a jerk! They shouldn't have made Faramir into a jerk; he's like Frodo, and all smart and cool and 'let's go'!" In the movie, he detained Frodo and Sam, was highly suspicious of them, was slightly covetous of the ring, and took them to Gondor. In the book, he didn't even touch the ring; when he figured out that Frodo was the ringbearer, he basically indicated that he wasn't interested in the power of the ring, that it was better off being destroyed, and he let Frodo and Sam go. Faramir is one of my favorite characters (although he has a very small role); but I thought he was really intelligent and honorable, and just really sweet. The movie-Faramir is such a huge disappointment.
My other thoughts on the movie were: I thought it might have been a bit pointless to those who haven't read the book, so with a bit more narration, some of the events would have had more meaning than what came across. I loved the interaction between Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. I thought that although they didn't overemphasize Eowyn's crush on Aragorn, they did overplay Aragorn's supposed return interest in her. That really pissed me off. I loved the Ents! They downplayed Sam and Frodo's journey, which was a bit annoying. And there wasn't enough of Merry and Pippin to suit me.
But I still really enjoyed the movie! It makes me want to go and re-read the book now. ^_~
