Yay for more fandom essays. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] windsorblue for pointing the way. LOL. I promise not to post for every essay I read that I like or agree with. But for now: Did You Notice? It's Fandom, Not Wal-Mart. Not sure what this essay would bring, I chose it by its catchy title, and was apprehensive, but pleasantly surprised by its subject. I think that most people are happy with the warnings system. But for the most part, I like some of the basic warnings, but the more involved ones seem slightly silly to me. (Like deathfics ~ I know that some people avoid them like the plague, but if there's a warning of deathfic, doesn't that kind of ruin the story? Maybe not in all stories, but it just seems like it's giving it away...)

But anyway, it was an entertaining read.

I meant to say more, but now I have to go.

And Russell's annoying. And so are fuckers on eBay. =(

That's true, but I still side with the rights of the reader to know ahead of time. For people like me, who buried a parent after nursing them through a long illness, unlabeled deathfics can be traumatic. Since most people read to be entertained, I think they should know what they're getting into.

I know people say that novels don't warn about major character death, but it's different with fanfic, IMO. When some people read lots of fanfic about certain characters, over time, they develop a stronger attachment to them than they do to characters in a novel.

I'm a big believer in warning readers ahead of time. If an author chooses not to, that's fine, but they forfeit the right to complain if readers don't want to read anything they write after being squicked by something they weren't warned for. Once bitten, twice shy. Would you trust an author who doesn't warn for something like NCS, torture, rape, etc. if those things bothered you?
