I'm guilty of depending on the cash register readout too. But that's often because you're trying to go quickly either to get to the next person, or because the customer is trying to catch their train which leaves in 3 minutes (I guess this one applies to me more specifically because I worked in -- literally -- Grand Central Station).
But that's not to say that if someone was asking me a question specifically about my account that I wouldn't be able to do simple math in my head (or on the computer calculater, for cripes' sake)! And from the way she was practically desperate for me to fill out an "Error In Billing" form, I get the feeling that I know more about how the whole holding funds thing works than she does. =/
