I woke up later on Thursday than I was supposed to. I had planned to leave at 11am in order to get to the hospital at noon. But I woke up at 11, so there was no way I was going to make it. I guess it really threw me off because I wasn't able to leave the house until 12:30pm and didn't even get to the hospital until 1:45pm. I left at 4pm thinking that Maryann was going to meet me soon thereafter (she'd said that she'd be done at work at 4), and that Angelica would probably get to the city at around 5 or 5:30 because I'd specifically told her the night before -- when she asked if there was a specific time that she was supposed to be leaving home -- that I really wanted her to leave at 4pm because that's when I'd be leaving the hospital.
Of course, I was wrong on both counts. I spent about an hour and a half alone, waiting and walking around between 70th and 80th Streets, and 1st and Lexington Avenues. What fun. When I called Angelica at 4, she said that she would be leaving in about an hour (I'm impressed that she actually got out of the house by about 5:20), and Maryann neglected to mention that she'd be stuck doing clean-up until about 6pm. Sometimes I don't even know why I try. (If you're perceptive you'd be able to see my resigned shrug here.) Lucky for me I had a rum and coke to keep me occupied. Which, of course, didn't last very long.
Eventually I made my way down to Grand Central and over to Book-Off. At least I found something which made me feel a bit better, one of the Weiß Kreuz Dramatic Precious CDs. So that was nice. Angelica called me a little after 6 to let me know that she'd arrived, and she came over to meet me. After a while of browsing, we were ready to go; Angelica said she was hungry, so we were trying to think of where to get something to eat. Then I remembered that Fridays has a happy hour from 4-7pm during the week, so we headed over there. We got two (smallish) Margaritas (with lots of ice) for $2.50 each, and a plate of buffalo wings (minus the massively salty hot sauce) for around $4.50. Which was actually pretty worth it. I only had 3 wings 'cause I'd had a snack earlier, and Angelica devoured the rest. Maryann met us there at around 7:30? Something like that, and we left a little later.
We walked over to take the F train from 42nd & 6th Avenue. Let me just mention ahead of time how I called the Bowery Ballroom (seeing as how I've never been there before) to find out directions there by train. Their very nice recording said to take the F to 2nd Avenue. We found out later that this is the worst thing you could do, especially if you're not really sure where Delancey Street is. ::sweatdrop:: Instead, take the F to the Delancey Street station and walk about 2 blocks and it'll be right smack in front of you. As you might have guessed, we walked around for a good 20 minutes or more trying to find the right streets, with bad directions given by a gay couple who were very cute, but I think had a grudge against us because we'd been walking a bit slowly in front of them.
So we eventually found the place and went in; it was probably around 8:45 by this time. We'd missed the first band, Edgewater, but we caught the rest of Lo-Pro's set. We sort of milled around a bit on the main floor, but during the intermission we went upstairs to the balcony area. Maryann asked me to get her a Screwdriver, so I did. I hadn't decided on what to get to drink, and Angelica was also thinking about it. Then I remembered that Jeanette (a co-worker) said that I should try a "Thug Passion". But the bartender didn't know what that was and I couldn't for the life of me remember what was in it. So I called Jeanette and she told me (Red Alize + Hennessey). But they didn't have Alize, so that was that. Angelica wanted an apple martini, but they didn't have the sour pucker, so she got a glass of Midori instead. I was still undecided. (Maybe I should tell you that I had been determined to use this opportunity to get drunk -- or at least buzzed -- since before I actually purchased the tickets. Yes, you read correctly. I don't exactly have lots of opportunities to do this sort of thing, you know.)
Angelica took a few sips of her Midori. She didn't like it. So I oh-so-graciously took it off her hands (I liked it). We realized that Maryann was totally smashed already (short, skinny, and empty-stomached) and decided not to get her anymore drinks. Most of the way through the cup of Midori, I decided I'd try a gin and tonic and sent Angelica to go get it. I told her that if she liked it she could have half since I had her Midori. She came back and tried it, but didn't like that either. Oh well, more for me then. ^^; I finished the Midori and started on the gin and tonic. I had been leaning on a counter of sorts (it surrounds the soundbooth guy and overlooks the stage); so it was only when I stood up straight to let Maryann have a sip of my gin and tonic, that I realized I was as off-balance as Maryann looked. ::snort:: I giggled about that (you can imagine why I thought it was funny) and leaned back on the counter. I don't think Angelica caught it at that point. But a bit later when I finished up the gin and tonic, I straightened up again and oh-so-subtly let Angelica know that I was totally buzzed by saying that "I'm... um... a bit..." ::makes wavy/tipsy motion with hands:: And then, of course, I burst out into giggles. Angelica said something like "Oh god," and rolled her eyes. That was pretty funny too.
At one point, I don't know what was being said, but Angelica mentioned how she could completely tell that I was buzzed because I kept gesturing as I talked, much more than usual I suppose. Then I said something and brought my hand down, and it just happened to catch her hand on the way down, so her cup of ice fell to the floor. I don't know if anyone in a sober state can just imagine how hysterically funny that was! I doubled over in laughter and Angelica yelled at me in an exasperated voice to "stop motioning all over the place," but that was just as funny. Looking back on it now, I still sort of have a good chuckle over it. For myself, I could tell that I was really hanging all over Angelica (which is definitely not normal for me), although I didn't realize that I'd been gesticulating all over the place as well. ^_~ I wonder if Maryann found everything to be just as funny?
During all these goings-on, the third band, Apartment 26, played their set. They were good as well, although nothing to write home about for me. When they were finished, I asked Angelica and Maryann if they wanted to go back downstairs to see Three Days Grace, and Angelica avoided answering in that way of hers, but since I wanted to, we went downstairs. I held onto the handrails like a good girl. I certainly didn't want to fall flat on my face before even getting to see the band I came to see.
When we got downstairs we found a nice spot on the edge of the crowd that wasn't too far from the stage. Angelica was still determined to have a drink that she liked so she got a cosmopolitan from the pretty female bartender. As we stood there, I could feel the buzz fading, so I asked Angelica to get me a gin and tonic with midori. I realized that I could really understand why people get addicted to being drunk (or buzzed). The feeling is so nice -- everything's just funny and okay, you certainly don't want to stop feeling that way. ::sigh:: Well. I finished that one just as Three Days Grace was starting up, so it was nice. By the time the buzz wore off again, I was fully enjoying the concert so I didn't feel like I wanted another drink or anything. Oh, but to have seen me during the concert. I think it must have been the funniest sight. I headbanged the whole time, not stopping for anything but the pauses between songs.
Three Days Grace was abso-fucking-lutely amazing. They sounded great live, which I was really happy to discover. I had planned on listening to the rest of their songs (besides I Hate Everything About You) before going to the show, but with all that's been going on, I never really had a chance. But I had been sort of apprehensive -- I was afraid I'd only like their hit, but all of their songs were great, and amazingly enough I could actually hear the lyrics, which were really great too. I think they finished their set around 11:30, and announced they'd be sticking around to "hang out" (aka sign stuff), so we went to see how much they were selling stuff for. Stuff was surprisingly cheap, I got a CD and an armband for $20, and all three of us had our CDs signed by the band members, who were really great. That has got to be one of my best experiences, I am so glad I was able to go. (And just think, if they get really big, I can say that I saw them for $13 back when... LOL.)
By the time I got home (1am), my knees hurt from jumping, my right shoulder hurt from massive throwing of the goat, the whole back of my neck hurt from headbanging, my throat hurt from screaming... ah, but what good pain it was! The next day was Friday, so I had to work all damn day long, but every time I had a twinge in my neck I would have to work to keep the shit-eating grin off my face. I'm just going to have a lot of good memories of that night.
For this one, I'd love to read a post by the designated driver's perspective, ::coughAngelicacough:: I'm sure she's bound to remember more details than inebriated me.
Of course, this has all created some sort of a monster. I now regularly skim the local club websites for future show possibilities. Well, in all good conscience, I can't really blame it on this particular show. It really all started with last year's Metallica concert (for which I have not yet written a report, but still entertain the vague intention of doing so), which was so amazing. It gave me this weird idea in my head that, like, I have fun at concerts. And wait, I have some money to actually go to a few. I only blame the Three Days Grace concert for giving me this shocking idea that I can go to some cheap and fun concerts. So now I'm seriously scanning for cheap local concerts to go to. The only thing is, I so know that the TDG one was a real fluke; I didn't know that their music was exactly the type that I really love -- that pure rock sound. Some of the stuff that's really popular right now doesn't do anything for me (Blink 182 or The White Stripes for example). I like them, but I wouldn't really be interested in seeing them live. I'm obviously going to have to figure something out.
But speaking of monsters and concerts and such. I might have mentioned that Liz and I are going to the Metallica concert on April 20th. Well, due high demand, they decided to make an additional date at Nassau Coliseum, for the next day. You'll never guess. Angelica bought tickets for two seats to the April 21st concert. LOLOL! So I'll be going two days in a row to see them. Who'dve thought?! She got them on ebay for $90, so she says that my ticket is part of my birthday present. The past few years she's been giving my birthday present this great amount of forethought and planning and stuff. I haven't gotten used to it yet. Just when I was starting to lighten up about getting her birthday gift, she decides to go all paranoid on me. But I already know what I'll be getting her, so I'm not worried about it. I just can't afford to buy it right now.
So I feel like my social calendar is just all filled up.
April 8-11: Anime Boston
April 20: Metallica concert with Liz
April 21: Metallica concert with Angelica
July 29-August 1: Otakon
October 28-November 1: Yaoicon
Actually, with this kind of schedule, I don't know when I'll ever be able to afford her gift. Jeez. And not to mention Angelica's mom found a good deal on plane tickets to San Francisco for Yaoicon, so I'm going to have to start paying Angelica for my ticket (which at $216 is really good but still a lot of money).
Now this has become a babble post, so I will stop. When I've gathered my thoughts more effectively, I'll continue.

Date: 2004-03-15 11:42 pm (UTC)Yay, I'll get to see you at Otakon and Yaoi Con. I'll be the person trailing after all the Prince of Tennis cosplayers. ^____^
Thanks for the update on your dad. I'm glad everything went well, and that he's home.

Date: 2004-03-23 10:14 pm (UTC)I'm definitely looking forward to seeing you at Otakon and Yaoicon, I'm glad you'll be going to Ycon this year, I missed you last year!
Oh! I wanted to ask you what day you'll be coming into Baltimore for Otakon this year? If you're planning to be there for pre-reg pickup on Thursday, I was wondering if you and a bunch of other con/fandom friends (DC, Jana, Susan, Artemis, Leslie, whoever's going to Otakon) want to get together for dinner? That day (Thursday) also happens to be Angelica's birthday, so I thought it might be nice to all hang out together! (Let me know if you're interested... if so, maybe pass the word along? I know you have connections with everyone who might be interested. ^^)

Date: 2004-03-24 04:25 am (UTC)Y Con is one I may only go to every other year. Mainly I'm going this year because I expect Prince of Tennis to be fairly popular.
I wanted to ask you what day you'll be coming into Baltimore for Otakon this year?
We'll be there on Thursday afternoon some time. After last year, I figured we'd be better off doing that. Hehe. I have no idea who will be there this year. I know jana wants to go, but her family doesn't. Susan might be there, but she'll be day hopping it. DC will definitely be there.
I'm up for supper, if that's okay with DC and Jay. I guess we'll have to talk about it closer to the con. I need to get my act together on Japan, first. ^___^
