It's begun. The annual costume hunt is now underway. This year, I'm going to try and make our costumes. Everytime I mention it to my mom, she sort of gets this look on her face like she's trying to hold back a laugh or a snicker, but I don't see why I can't do it. I mean, I don't think they'll come out perfect on the first try, but compared to what we've been getting with other people, I think it'll be good enough. I mean, we're not doing anything really elaborate. And it's not like I'm working with some vague idea in my head; I do have a pattern that I'm using. Not to mention, I do have the people I'm making the costumes for right here, I'm not going by measurements alone. Of course I'll have to make adjustments once I've finished sewing the pieces together, but at least I'll be able to try it on the person and see exactly what needs to be fixed.

And if worse comes to worse, we can always go to Angelica's grandmother's house and beg for help. ^^;

Besides, what I'm making so far are just uniform jackets; they shouldn't be too difficult. I'm just worried that since they're a men's style, the shoulders are going to be too broad and the hips too slim. We don't exactly have boyish figures (although one could wish...). But, I guess that'll just have to be dealt with at the time. I can keep it in mind when I'm cutting the pattern, and I figure that if the hips come out to slim, I can always add side inserts later. I think my mom is forgetting that these aren't necessarily for stylish everyday wear -- they're costumes, and they can look put-together and still be okay. I'm certainly not deluding myself into thinking they'll come out perfect, but the only way to get better is to start and keep on going.

I wish she'd hide her skepticism a little better, though, because it's making me fucking nervous.

Yesterday, Angelica and I went to the fabric store in my area to look for fabric for our Shoujo Kakumei Utena outfits. We're going as Juri, Touga, and Shiori from the movie. (Although Shiori will have a uniform, and not go around naked.) So we need orange, black, and a wine-colored canvas material. The fabric store only had the black. It was a really nice material, and only $7.99/yard, but we really would prefer for all of the material to match. So today I'm going down to the Garment District in the city to scout around for fabric. I hope I find something, and that it's not too expensive. We're going to need to get about 12-13 yards of material to start, and we're trying to keep the cost at $100 or less.

And this is just our first costume. Angelica and I will both wear black pants (as Shiori and Touga), and we'll have to find Liz a pair of white pants for Juri.

Our second costumes will be Brad, Farfie, and Schu from Weiß Kreuz. Angelica just bought Brad's cream (or white? I can't remember) suit from ebay. But I'll have to try and make another jacket for Liz as Schu (his green one), and she'll be able to wear the same white pants for his outfit. And I'll also have to try and make Farfie's vest. Which, considering all of these jackets (and vest) all look almost exactly the same, shouldn't be so difficult because I already have the pattern! And by the time I get around to making the Schu and Farfie stuff, I should have already worked out the details of making the jackets to our sizes. ::crosses fingers:: For Farfie's pants, I'm going to buy a pair of black Dickies and see if Dawn can't bondify them for me.

Our third costumes, as I said, are still up in the air, but we're seriously considering doing a Samurai Deeper Kyo group. You can look at the character designs here, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] gokumew2. Doumo! Angelica would be Kyoshirou (when he's all genki), with the white gi, which should be insanely easy to buy (just go to the countless martial arts supply sites to order). I want Liz to go as Yuya, but she'll probably end up going as Yukimura. Yukimura's outfit might be a bit difficult. The pants and gi top aren't hard to do (I think the top is from a Judo gi), but I'd probably have to make that no-sleeve long vest thing myself. Which, by this time of having made 5 jackets, shouldn't be difficult. And, I'd have to make practically the same thing for myself as Kyou. I've been thinking about what to do for his pants, and I've narrowed it down a bit: (1) make them myself, (2) buy red hakama pants and cut the bottom hems jagged, or (3) buy red karate pants and cut the bottom hems jagged.

I don't know what I'll do, but I do know that I have plenty of time. Otakon isn't until the beginning of August, so I have at least 6 months to complete all these tasks. ::whimpers::

Have I mentioned costumes for Yuricon? Hehehe. Well, at least we have that sort of covered. Angelica suggested we go as Neu and Hell from Schreient (from Weiß Kreuz) with their lab coats (which we already have from when the three of us bought lab coats to go to Louie's cosplay birthday party as Cyprine and Ptilol (from Sailor Moon S), and Illuminati Mana). ^^;

OMG ::runs around like a chicken with its head cut off:: Waaaay too many things to do! ::whimpers::
