I went to see I Am Legend on Friday with Judy, Liz, and Juliet. Earlier showings were sold out, so we got tickets for the 11pm showing in Times Square. Which means that after the movie was over at 1am, we stood inside the theater discussing it for a good 50 minutes and I didn't get home til around 3:30am (continuing my recent streak of not going to sleep until 3-4am). Though it was fine because I bumped into Ron (who I met back when I was working at GCS and just the day before found and friended on facebook -- talk about weird coincidences!) at the theater, as well as finished up my NA gift-shopping.

I have a lot to say about this movie and a lot of it is incoherent frothing. The first half was a very good zombie movie. An interesting premise, some good surprise-scares, and some creepiness (when whats-his-name goes after Sam, and later the "Fred! If you're real, tell me now, Fred!").

There were definitely some plot-holes -- how the hell did he get those gates on the inside of his windows on tracks?! Why weren't the cars on the street dirtier (as pointed out by Judy)? Also, if big cats (lions) weren't affected by the airborne virus, why didn't we see the place overrun with domesticated cats? Were domesticated cats also affected by saliva- or blood-borne virus? I would also like to know exactly why the airborne virus didn't affect dogs, though that wasn't necessarily a plot hole; I'm just curious about it.

The second half was a complete cop-out. The whole god/faith thing came out of nowhere, and the ending, the whole reason for his sacrifice, was based on his being convinced and having new-found faith that whats-her-name would get away, and survive, and find the survivor's colony she believed to exist. Not to mention, that when she finally arrives at the colony, that they have some doctors or scientists that are actually able to use the blood in the vial to produce a cure. Take away the whole faith thing and the ending collapses.

Some more plot holes -- those walls surrounding the survivor's colony were DEFINITELY NOT TALL ENOUGH to prevent the zombies from getting in. That's complete bullshit. They climbed up the side of whats-his-name's house! There are MILLIONS of them; they can freaking stand on each others shoulders to climb over the wall. That's a HUGE freaking plot hole there; the fact that it's only shown in the last MINUTE of the movie doesn't excuse it. And where was whats-her-name coming from? I don't think that she was close enough to be able to hear whats-his-name's daily broadcasts on AM frequencies. And if, somehow, we're assuming that whats-his-name boosted the signal somehow, I would assume that the survivor's colony would have been able to receive the signal AND reply to it; they seemed pretty organized despite the not-high-enough walls.

Despite the badly written second half of the movie, I really enjoyed the first half. I was scared at the appropriate jump-in-your-seat parts. I thought the creepy parts were the coolest! I thought that Will Smith's acting was awesome! The portrayal of a man who's been alone in the city for 3 years was subtle at times and blatant at others. Really well done.

It's just too bad the ending totally ruined all that.

Saturday was Anna's cookie exchange party, which was much fun. Everyone baked such delicious cookies! I took a small sampling of each cookie home and counted myself lucky. There was lots of joking and hentai talk (and translation thereof) being bandied about, which isn't too unusual for this group. ^_~ I think my favorite moment was when Chris came back from the bathroom holding his vest and everyone asked if he was leaving now~. ^^;

Judy and I intended to go to a club later that night, but the whole no-sleep thing caught up with me and after dinner in the village and killing some time at a bar, I was not up to dancing. I was not up to doing anything but being horizontal and unconscious. Got home, once again, at 2am, and did not get to sleep til around 3am.

Sunday. Slept til 2pm! Judy convinced me to get up and meet her in the city for shopping, which probably wasn't as productive as it could have been for her. Had dinner and went home "early". And by early I mean just before 10pm.

Busy weekend was busy.
