The Dark Knight -- NOW SPOILER-FREE!
Jul. 21st, 2008 12:39 pmDespite staying home from work on Friday, I did go into the city to see The Dark Knight. It was pretty darn good. The quality of acting, all around, is just up there. Heath Ledger was great; an interesting and raw take on the Joker. Bale, Oldman, Freeman, Caine, Eckhart -- they were all their usual, greatly-talented selves.
Surprisingly, I realized I didn't like Maggie Gyllenhaal in the role of Rachel Dawes as much as Katie Holmes. You may ask, "god, why?!" (I certainly asked myself the same question when I came to this realization.) Well, I don't like the character of Rachel Dawes. Based on dialogue in Batman Begins, I think Rachel Dawes is a hypocritical, insensitive bitch. Aside from the fact that I dislike Katie Holmes, I think she did a better job at portraying that than Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal's Dawes was much more subdued. She did not have the same passion or drive that Holmes portrayed, which made for a much less memorable character this time around.
I can't believe I just wrote that I preferred Holmes as Dawes. It SO goes against the grain, considering how much I actually like Gyllenhaal.
I've discovered that I tend to like Bale's screentime as Bruce Wayne even more than as Batman. Not completely sure why that is -- and it has nothing to do with the rasp! Jeez, people, get over it!
Things I liked most about the movie: (1) the thing with the pencil; (2) the Harvey Dent-Bruce Wayne interaction; (3) all of Bale's screentime as Bruce Wayne.
