day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year

Last year at this time I was pretty intensely into Drive By Truckers and listening to a bunch of their albums, including Southern Rock Opera (2001) (my favorite), as well as The Dirty South (2004) and The Big To-Do (2010), so there are a couple of songs that stand out. There are so many of Cooley's songs where the lyrics just MAKE ME DIE because they're so awesome, like the price of being sober / is being scared out of your mind ("Shut Up and Get on the Plane") and the bottle ain't to blame and i ain't trying to / it don't make you do a thing, it just lets you ("Women Without Whiskey"). And Cooley has the most amazing deep voice, it sounds like sex and I love it. BUT. BUT PATTERSON. I love the way he sings, it's higher and more nasal and he kind of *talks* more than sings, but I LOVE how he does it, how his words sort of wrap around the music rather than flowing together with it. LASJDFLSAJDFLSAJ;FLASJ And, in a general sense, his songs tend to sound more like Southern Rock than the Alt-Country feel of Cooley's, and that's exactly what I like.

Drive-By Truckers' The Wig He Made Her Wear
Fave lines: them high heeled shoes and that wig he made her wear / reduced her charge to voluntary manslaughter
NOTE: THIS SONG IS BASED ON A TRUE STORY, WHAT EVEN...

Ahahahah, and then this whole DBT phase was followed by a weird obsession with this song. I listened to it on repeat, nonstop, for like two weeks. No other songs, just this one. This is one of the two Muse songs I actually like, and I can never remember the name of the other one.

Muse's Undisclosed Desires
Fave lines: you trick your lovers / that you're wicked and divine / you may be a sinner / but your innocence is mine

....and that's the end of the 30 Days of Song meme! \o/ I'm kind of sad; I had such a fun time doing this, I don't really want to stop -- in case you couldn't tell, I really enjoy talking about music! And it was a lot of fun getting comments and responses related to the posts but not even always associated with the particular songs. Would you guys be annoyed if I try to find another music meme to do? =3

So, if you missed any answers and you're curious, you can check the list of all days.

day 29 - a song from your childhood

LOL, this is probably the most unexpected song in this whole meme; it's clearly not my usual style and it's certainly not the only song from my childhood, but I think of this song almost any time I think of going driving with my parents when I was young. The two things my family does together are eat and go for a drive. We'd often combine the two and go to a specific restaurant that took a long drive to get to, haha.

We went on a road trip for like a week through Pennsylvania and West Virginia and Maryland and DC and I can't even remember because I was 13 or 14 at the time; Liz was 6 or 7. And my parents like country music so we had that type of station, or like soft rock, on the radio a lot. And I HATED IT. Oh, how could my parents betray me by liking country music? UGH. This song was the only exception; I loved it EVERY SINGLE TIME IT PLAYED. Which was a lot.

The lyrics, oh the lyrics. I am such a sucker for sad things. I can't even tell you the extent of it.

Joshua Kadison's Jessie
Fave lines (the chorus just takes my breath away; always): jessie paint your pictures 'bout how it's gonna be / by now I should know better; your dreams are never free / but tell me all about our little trailer by the sea / jessie you can always sell any dream to me

day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty

I... kind of had some rough times during college. And, while I've never been one to whom it would ever occur to say "this music helped me through ___" (because that's just not how I work), I've always been extremely into music and so have some very strong associations of certain music to certain times in my life.

So at the time I had basically just discovered Buck-Tick and was working my way through their backlog of music. There might be a couple of specific songs that trigger feelings of guilt, but they're more tied to the feel of the albums I was listening to at the time, Taboo and Kurutta Taiyou (one of my favorite BT albums). I just, kind of have to deal with the hurty feelings sometimes because there's just no way I could stop listening to BT, they're just too fucking good. <3

Buck-Tick's Iconoclasm (from the Taboo album)
Fave lines: one for the money / two for the x / skip three and four / five for japanese babies

day 27 - a song that you wish you could play

I... would like to start out being able to play music first? If I had a keyboard I could probably play (you know, with one finger) Frére Jaques and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by memory, but that's about it. Remember that post from day 26? NOT MUSICALLY INCLINED. Those 2 seconds I took violin lessons for? Ask me how much of that I remember. Absolutely nothing.

I'd love to be able to play some hard rock or southern rock tunes on guitar, or something metal and grinding, or something dirty on bass guitar, but in the spirit of choosing something which might be somewhat plausible...

Emily's Theme, from Nathan Johnson's score to Brick

No lyrics, but I'd like to note that I made a 30-second clip of this to use as my ringtone since I saw Brick last Fall. It replaced the Still Alive (radio mix) from Portal, which I'd had as my ringtone for THREE YEARS. (If you couldn't already tell, I'm really picky about my ringtones.)

day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument

So let me preface this by saying, I AM NOT MUSICALLY INCLINED. Probably more through lack of exposure and instruction than natural lack of ability. I took violin lessons for like 2 seconds when I was 9, but I'm pretty sure I was more interested in running around wild after school than I ever was in practicing.

BUT. I can play Kansas' Carry On Wayward Son on Guitar (Hero or Rock Band). Does that count? ^_~ I mean, I can actually play a lot of other songs on GH or RB too, but THIS SONG was the one that caused me to buy GH2 in the first place -- I love this song SO MUCH; it was my first cell ringtone for the longest time.... way back in the times of monophonic ringtones. That one is still my favorite ringtone-- I wish I could find it again. T_T

There is just nothing in the world like Southern Rock.

It bugs the hell out of me, though, when people call it "Carry On MY Wayward Son". (Even if I realize it's really NBD. STILL.)

Fave lines: masquerading as a man with a reason / my charade is the event of the season / and if I claim to be a wise man / it surely means that I don't know

day 25 - a song that makes you laugh

THIS SONG. Absolutely NEVER FAILS to make me laugh. It's a great song, don't get me wrong. (You know, for some definitions of the word "great".) But, the LYRICS. And then-- THE VIDEO. HOW ARE YOU EVEN REAL, DIO? How did you get along in your life before you were able to make this video of yourself stalking around epically/heroically/menacingly with a sword and living out your dreams of starring in films like Willow?!

Dio's Holy Diver
Fave lines: like the tiger / you can see his stripes but you know he's clean / oh, don't you see what I mean

day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral

Is it still called a funeral if you aren't being buried?

I'd like mine to be called an osaraba party, which I'm sure is atrocious grammar (because there's actually an idiomatic phrase for a real "going away party"), but whatever -- in Japanese, (o)saraba means a farewell (the "o" is an honorific used with certain words, in certain forms). ...and now you also know the meaning of my tag, yay!

So at my "funeral", there shouldn't be ONLY sad music played, but because I am overly enamored of epically sad music/lyrics in general, these are my top two choices; they are guaranteed to make (me) you(?) shed a tear.

Stan Rogers' Northwest Passage
Fave lines: tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage

I love that line so much I had part of it tattooed on my wrist. And basically, the whole fucking song is an amazing adventure relived every time I hear it (lyrics here).

Sakamoto Kyu's 上を向いて歩こう (Ue wo Muite Arukou) ["I Look Up When I Walk"]
Fave lines: ue wo muite arukou / namida ga koborenai you ni / nakinagara arukuu / hitoribotchi no yoru (i look up as i walk / so that the tears won't fall / though the tears well up as i walk / tonight i'm alone)
Japanese romaji & English translation of lyrics here.

I can never articulately describe how sad and beautiful this song is and it bugs me SO EFFING MUCH that it was called "Sukiyaki Song" in the 60s when it crossed over to the US, and then that the "English version(s)" fell so flat in comparison to the original.

day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding

My father used to sing Gene Vincent's Be-Bop-A-Lula to me all the time when I was younger, so I suppose if I ever were to have a wedding this would be an important choice, I think it would make him happy like not much else. He loveslovesloves American rock'n'roll music from the 50s and early 60s, back when he was a teenager in Indonesia. "That kind" of music was sort of frowned upon and my father's father sort of banned listening to music in the house (a lot of which had to do with them living in the midst of a very large population of Muslims, and I gather this was a sensitive thing in that particular place and time). It's sort of crazy to realize what sort of upbringing he had, and what the social climate was like when and where he lived... and to compare that to what my own upbringing was like, in NYC, poor but not in poverty, with a smart, liberal, socially-conscious mother and an adventurous, rebellious father...

In any case, I've just realized that music and food are two of the extremely few things we have in common, but that we both actually get excited about.

The idea of marriage makes me uncomfortable for a multitude of reasons, not all of them necessarily Good or Rational, and while (sadly) I don't think I'll end up getting married (and even then, not in a traditional sort of ceremony) before my father dies (wow, this is turning morbid), if it did happen, I'd be well pleased to play this.

Fave lines: be-bop-a-lula / she-e-e's my baby love / (my baby love, my baby love)

day 22 - a song that you listen to when you’re sad

After Inception came out, [livejournal.com profile] tekla created a fanmix called I love dissatisfied. This was the definitive fanmix for me; almost everything on it was stuff that I liked already or newly fell in love with. I tweaked it a little, added a few songs, but the core of it was her mix, and that became my playlist for the NEXT FOUR MONTHS. I didn't listen to anything else for the duration of that time. (And I still go back to it occasionally; it's so damn good.)

Which is why I'll always have the memory of dancing in a public park in Atlanta like a crazy person, with JGL's cover of Jacques Brel's La Valse a Mille Temps in my ears. <3

These are two go-to songs from that playlist that I've definitely listened to when feeling sad:

The Killers' Everything Will Be Alright
Fave lines: i'm coming to find you / if it takes me all night

Jacques Brel's Ne Me Quitte Pas
Fave lines: ne me quitte pas / je ne veux plus pleurer / je ne veux plus parler / je me cacherai là / a te regarder / danser et sourire
(don't leave me / i won't cry anymore / i won't speak anymore / i will hide right there / to see you / dancing and smiling)

day 21 - a song that you listen to when you’re happy

SURF ROCK. I love it so much. I love to listen to it when I'm in a very specific sort of happy mood, certain circumstances, and yeah... when it's really sunny outside?

Of course I love the original version of this song by the Beach Boys, but you know it's David Lee Roth's raspy-voiced, super-sexualized solo cover of California Girls from the mid-80s that will forever reside in my heart.

Fave lines: well east coast girls are hip / i really dig those styles they wear

And there's just no way I could leave out my favorite; the iconic surf rock artist: Dick Dale's Misirlou -- even though the song has been around in some form or another for over 30 years before Dick Dale (and then the Beach Boys) recorded it.

day 20 - a song that you listen to when you’re angry

I... don't really listen to music when I'm angry. My hot anger generally only lasts when the subject of my anger is in front of me (or just shortly thereafter), or if I'm talking about it to someone else; I suppose I don't ruminate (which is when I would be listening to music) about that kind of anger a whole lot. My cold anger, on the other hand, is usually emotional pain/sadness... at which point I'd listen to all types of sad/hurty music and wallow while building up emotional defenses.

Wow, is everyone actually this emo?

I'm not a huge fan of screamy vocals, but this is pretty much my one major exception. And it isn't even really that much of an exception because only their first album was kinda screamy and with every album, Mudvayne got less and less screamy, and now maybe it's a couple of words here and there for each song.

Even so, Mudvayne is probably what I'd listen to if I needed to listen to music to feel in-touch with my anger. Ironically, this one is Happy?

Fave lines: peel me from the skin / tear me from the rind / does it make you happy now?

day 19 - a song from your favorite album

My favorite album is Six/Nine by Buck-Tick.

Every. Single. Song. on this album. is sex.

The whole thing is like one big, protracted orgasm.

Seriously, I forgot how freaking weird (awesome) all the PVs (videos) are for all the songs on this album. Buck-Tick did a bunch of "video concerts" for the release of this album, where a PV was made for each of the songs on the album and (I think) shown in order. Later there were a few PVs made for the album's singles, I guess, so a few of those songs have two official videos.

I think I may have to go home and rewatch a bunch of my B-T lives and PVs. It's been too long since I was so into them, but this album will always, always, always be my favorite album of all albums in the world, ever. =D

My favorite song is Aikawarazu no "Are" no Katamari ga Nosabaru Hedo no Soko no Fukidamari, or "The Ever-Unchanging Mass of "That" Drifts at the Bottom of Selfish Vomit". English-translated lyrics here.

Fave lines: oyogu sakana / oyoganai sakana / oyogeru sakana / oyogenai sakana (see icon!)

day 18 - a song that you wish you heard on the radio

Happened across this one yesterday while looking for a good vid for Don't Fear the Reaper and realized ooooh, I wish I heard Ram Jam's Black Betty more often!

Fave line: whoa, black betty bam-ba-lam

My original pick for this was Drive-By Truckers' The Three Great Alabama Icons because not only is the music lovely, but I just cannot ever get enough of Patterson Hood's adorable, accented, earnest voice combined with his sing-songy storytelling. There are probably lots of places where you can hear DBT on the radio, but well-- not in NYC. And even in places where you'd hear their songs on the radio, I'm not sure you'd necessarily hear this song?

This song is about, well, as the title says. And is the set-up for Wallace, the next song on Southern Rock Opera (my favorite of all their albums), which as he says, is about the devil welcoming George Wallace to Hell like a real southerner-- with sweet tea.

PLEASE PATTERSON, TEACH ME MORE. <3

day 14 - a song that no one would expect you to love

Basically, anything by P Money. He's British Hip Hop (aka Grime), which is in many ways reminiscent of early 90s American Hip Hop (the only time I was actually into Hip Hop), so I'm not surprised I like it. But a lot of people are -- those who know what I "normally" listen to (heavy/slash/stoner metal and hard rock, mostly).

Thing is, Ho Riddim (any many of his other songs, especially those on the album P Money Is Power) is exactly the sound I like -- lots of prominent, heavy bass/beat; and I love his voice, which is often a big factor in what I like to listen to; lyrics that aren't stupid beyond belief (like Wretch 32, which is why I often have to stop listening even though I like his style).

I wish I was more aware of what beats I like; I wonder if I have a tendency toward a certain beat-count over others.

Fave lines: there's a war against cheesy music / and me and my fans are the resistance

day 13 - a song that is a guilty pleasure

This whole fucking band is a guilty pleasure.

Back in 2006 I was a teeny bit obsessed with Panic! At the Disco's album A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (2005). It was only for a month or two, but I still do love all the songs on that album-- clearly they're on the lighter side of my music spectrum, but jesus, the way Brendon Urie uses his voice is kind of exactly what I like to hear. And then, the lyrics are interesting, the music is interesting. Well, I found it to be so, anyway.

But they completely fell off my radar after that and I didn't even know about their second album Pretty. Odd. (2008) (which sounds kind of like a modern Beatles album, which I find boring) and then just found out about Vices & Virtues (2011) (which sounds closer to the first album but still mostly boring) in time to catch their show at Terminal 5 this past Tuesday. LOL, YOU DON'T EVEN WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY 15-YR OLD GIRLS WERE AT THAT FUCKING SHOW. I got there for doors open and decided to just wait on the side while the sea of teenage girls went in. Christ, what a scary moment. I don't think I've ever been to a concert with that many percentage (overwhelming majority) of girls. Seriously. They're a really fun live, though -- they certainly know how to talk to the crowd, keep us engaged, etc.

What I discovered while at the show (with Rich, [livejournal.com profile] starsparkle333, [livejournal.com profile] zeenell, and [livejournal.com profile] likeaglass) is that P!ATD are like, TWENTY-FOUR. Which means when their first album came out, when I was 24, THEY WERE BARELY EIGHTEEN. I just find it kind of funny that I like their stuff from when they were so very young, and not the stuff from now, when the age difference isn't all that signficant.

...did I mention how [livejournal.com profile] likeaglass has been trying to pimp me into P!ATD-bandom since RatJam? And now that I've seen them live I realize I really should read those BDSM fics she sent me....

I almost don't want to single out a particular song because I really like the album as a whole, but Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off is probably my favorite by a nose.

Fave lines: is it still me that makes you sweat? / am I who you think about in bed?
