osaraba: (dS fv srsly?)

Criminal Minds is... criminal.

I've never seen such a shitty show. WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE IT? I'm so sorry, [livejournal.com profile] firefox1490, you may want to turn your head away from this rant (you heard it all over text anyway); I don't mean to bash something you like, but season 1 of this show has got some serious issues, and I really just need to get this all of my chest. I hope that it's actually better in the following seasons, but I truly don't think I can make it that far myself.

IT IS SO OFFENSIVE. There are three women on the team, and while only one of them is sort of a main character, she's actually a good one. She's got some depth, she's strong, she's a minority (two birds one stone, maybe?), she's in no way a wilting flower. But the writers put words in her mouth that -- and there's no way they'd write a guy saying these things -- I CRINGE to hear her say, and am no where near convinced is in character for her to be saying! Things it offends my feminist sensibilities to hear come out of the mouth of the only (for all intents and purposes) female profiler on the team. Like, "no confident man would have to...." and "he goes after the weakest in society: the women and children." JFC I WANTED TO PUKE SO BAD.

And then there's the fact that the depiction of women in general is pretty depressing and one-sided. I don't know about you but I'm tired of seeing women on this show depicted as victims of horrific, violent and cruel crimes. I AM NOT SUPER SENSITIVE ABOUT VIOLENCE. (Someone even made a joke at work today about how insensitive I can be.) But goddamn, change it up a little, IF ONLY FOR THE VARIETY. I know statistically most serial killers are white men between the ages of 25 and 35, but again, for the sake of entertainment fighting the mind-numbing boredom, let's do something a bit more interesting, shall we? Or, *gasp* here's an idea: let's get more interesting women on the show WHO AREN'T JUST VICTIMS OF VIOLENT CRIME to balance things out a little? Easy peasy.

And this is not even what bothers me most. Because, truthfully, I could still watch this show even with the sexist slant (I mean, let's face it, there's so much of it anyway) -- IF THE PLOT WAS ACTUALLY ANY GOOD.

But I'm predicting every single QUOTE-REVELATION-UNQUOTE that there is, with regularity, in if not every single episode, then damn near close to it. Can we also not *handwave* things like basic police work when attempting to draw out a case to fill those 45 minutes? Can we not give HUGE FUCKING CLUES that, if you've watched ANY police procedural shows EVER, IN YOUR LIFE, you'd know, within the first 5 minutes predicts who the criminal is? And in a totally sexist way, to boot? Like the fact that if a killer uses a .22-caliber gun, THE SHOOTER IS CLEARLY A WOMAN? I knew as soon as they said it was a .22. SO DAMN PREDICTABLE.

CAN YOU FEEL MY DISGUST?

There are clearly a lot of things I find either offensive or annoying about this show (as of season 1, of course), and to be fair I think some of these things wouldn't bother me so much if they weren't ALL present at the same time.

JSYK, I've seen up to episode 19 out of 22, and because I'm anal and masochistic, I'm going to watch the rest of s1 and a few eps of s2 just so I can read this damn Inception/Criminal Minds crossover fic that I'm interested in.

...I want to say Elle says those things and thank God, Elle leaves after the...7th? episode of season 2. And Morgan stops being a bully and it really does get better.

And they do get better about making the crimes much more of a variety and more of the crimes that spread across the US, although I do think that violence against women needs to be a big part of the show to truly represent the highest victims of crimes and the highest victim that most serial criminals target.

It gets better. I would honestly skip 1. It's in 2 that they find a good voice.

Somehow, they lighten up on Morgan, and the introduction of Pagett Brewster turns it into a different show.

agreed with above. season one, while it has moments I do really like, is not what I would have someone I was trying to bring into the fandom watch. mid season two is when it really starts to get good. pretty much right after Elle leaves. (not that I think Elle was the problem, I liked her. although I loooove Emily who comes in around episode 10 I think.)
