When it rains, it pours. #nottalkingabouttheweather

My parents' house was robbed last night. No one was home at the time, though we think my father coming home and talking to the neighbor on the front porch scared them into running out the back patio. They got my parents' passports, two laptops, and my mom's external hard drive. Which my mom is completely broken-hearted about since it was the only copy of her 26+ years of work at UNDP before retiring at the beginning of this year.

Beat cops and the evidence team were surprisingly quick -- they were finished within three hours of my father's call to 911 and two hours of arriving at the house.

Still, now I get to go to my parents in an hour or so and start calling banks, credit bureaus, and repairmen. Not fun.

In other news, I'm trying to sell some of my stuff in preparation for moving to LA in February. If you have any interest in comics or manga, check these out-- I've got them up on craigslist right now, but you guys have first dibs if you get back to me within the next day or two. And the last one is definitely negotiable; make me an offer!

DEMO comics by Brian Wood & Becky Cloonan - $8
Vampire Comics - Bite Club (complete) and Anita Blake (1-4) - $10
Lot of 32 English Manga (Kenshin, Hikaru no Go, Utena, Nana, more) - $50

Last thing-- I'm hosting the upcoming SEX IS NOT THE ENEMY FICATHON and need a banner or two for promotion! Anyone willing to come up with something? I was supposed to work on it last night but then this crap happened. =(((

all my friends know the low rider

So here's a little taste of what I've been doing at my parents' house this weekend: cleaning, mopping, scrubbing (MORE cleaning, mopping, scrubbing), SHOVELING FUCKING SNOW. Also, putting up mirrors. Oh, you know, EIGHT of them.

die, die my darling (SPOILERS for Misfits ahead) )

MOST IMPORTANTLY, HAS ANYONE WRITTEN ANY INCEPTION/MISFTS FUSIONS OR CROSSOVERS YET?!!!! Because that needs to happen, like, ASAP!!!

I can't figure out exactly who I want to be who, and whether I want to base that choice on ability or personality. I want Arthur to be Nathan so bad, because I love them both the best and also because ARTHUR AS AN UNRELENTING PRICK IS A HUGE FUCKING KINK ALL ON ITS OWN, GUYS. PLEASE TO BE FILLING MY PROMPT, OH MAGICAL WRITERS OF FLIST!!!

ETA: MISFITS UPDATE (HUGE SPOILERS 2x03-04) )

hide what you have to hide / and tell what you have to tell

So I'm mostly still away from my computer until Monday at work, but I'm eating into my sleeping hours reading fanfic and profic because I'm GOING FUCKING CRAZY helping my parents work on house stuff before a cousin on my father's side comes to visit next week. And I don't think you guys have ever seen me going fucking crazy because I'm normally the most even-tempered person you've ever seen and I don't really allow crap to crossover into LJ much, but JFC, when this is over I'm going to lock myself in my room and not come out for days and days, which is kind of what I've been doing after work for the last month or two anyway. lasjdfljasfl

ANYWAY. I have to make a couple of random recs for fic that have really really lifted my spirits because of how fucking amazingly badass or angsty or epic or hilarious they are:

  1. THE BADASS: [Inception, Arthur/Eames] [livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon's Unexpected Plot Twist. WIP (currently at 2/3, but with the end part projected for Sunday) Parts: 1 2, 3a, 3b. The description I wrote for my delicious notes effectively describes all that I love about it: romantical. action. potty-mouthed badassery. DADT. clothes-shopping pr0n. dialogue like broken glass. "turning obscenity into something aspirationally untouchable." hair triggers. gratuity of every flavor. basically, FUCK YES.

  2. THE ANGSTY: [Inception, Arthur/Eames] [livejournal.com profile] whiskyrunner's Rough Trade. WIP (at 1/2, with the end projected for next week). Written as a fill for a prompt from the heavens by a magical OP-anon; Arthur can't admit to himself what he wants, and Eames doesn't let him deny himself. That's really an inadequate description, but it's all very harsh and kind of brutal and devastatingly delicious.

  3. THE EPIC: [Inception, Arthur/Eames] [livejournal.com profile] sho_no_tabi's Life During Wartime. Can be read alone, but it's really part of a bigger series (in order: A Soul Awake, Something Like, LDW, and then the current WIP complete Red Oni, Blue Oni), wherein Arthur's background is something that makes me squee uncontrollably. Relatedly, some of the dialogue makes me flail uncontrollably as well. I don't want to spoil the subtle reveal because I know that not knowing about it at first made the realization SO MUCH SWEETER for me.

  4. THE HILARIOUS: [Merlin, Arthur/Merlin] [livejournal.com profile] moonythestrals' A Random Collection of Firsts. Really you should read the absolutely unexpectedly adorable Fratboy!AU that comes before this because it would lack impact if you didn't -- which was great, don't get me wrong -- but the coda is what had me giggling and laughing full-out, with a moment or two of jaw-droppingly HOT FUCK YES sort of reactions.

  5. BONUS MUSIC REC: So I went to see the Alvin Ailey dance performance on Wednesday, which was lovely, really. But I left determined to find more music by the FRENCH INDUSTRIAL PERCUSSION group Les Tambours du Bronx. FUCK YESSSSSS. During one of the pieces I had to resist the urge to get up and dance. I wanted nothing more than to leave and go to an industrial club and dance until 4am. HOW DID I NOT KNOW THEY EXIST?! I have been listening to them ALL NIGHT tonight. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send you some mp3s!

You know that dream that "everyone" has?

The one where you're naked in public, like school or work or something? I've never had that dream. Until last night. But it wasn't so much public as it was my back yard (though it looked completely different even though IRL instead of having windows, I have a patio door that actually does lead to the back yard). And at first I felt perfectly comfortable. But then I realized the light was on in my room behind me and then there were some random people cutting through my backyard and the next-door neighbors (on the side which IRL there are no next-door neighbors) were sleeping in their huge king sized bed which was out on their patio.

So when I realized all of these things, I tried to back up into my room, but the door was a bit farther away than I realized. Instead, I tried to pull some curtains down and wrap them around me. But I don't think I actually got too far with that.

Instead, my mind must have just been like, Done with this shit. NEXT! Because then I was sitting in some outdoor patio or lounge, maybe a rooftop somewhere. I was dressed in an evening gown (with sequins, which I would NEVER EVER wear IRL, EWWWWW). I was waiting for someone to show up so I could give him something, or get something from him; it wasn't really all that clear at that point. But Eames showed up \o/ and turns out I was giving him back a navy suit jacket that he'd left with me. It was delicious and warm.

But after giving it back, we basically said our goodbyes and went in different directions.

Sigh. My mind is such a tease.

And now for some boring house-related babble... )

"And like moths to a flame, whilst the lights are on, it’s hard not to be drawn in."

If you were not already aware, more (awesome!!!) pics of the Codpiece Place Housewarming can be found here.

I walk by the Rockefeller Guest House every single day on my way home from work and I think I noticed it once. What an interesting history. I'd love to see pictures of the inside and the courtyard in the back, but apparently they have rarely (if ever) been taken.

There's a contemporary art exhibition at the Initial Access gallery in the UK that I wish I could see. Wallpaper* published an article about the Lightness of Being exhibition today. Four artists' works -- in the medium of neon lights -- are displayed, recalling and reawakening my interest in Bruce Nauman's works from the late 60s into the 70s. (I had the pleasure of seeing "The True Artist Helps the World by Revealing Mystic Truths" while at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, earlier this year.)

I'm taken with Jason Rhoades' installation, and Tracey Emin's I know, I know, I know -- this photograph of it, in particular:

[edit1:] I need to get to the MoMA or the Guggenheim soon. I just saw the modern/contemporary art exhibits at the Met a few weeks ago, and I doubt they've changed yet. And obviously I'm in the mood to view me some contemporary art. If anyone's interested in going on any particular day, let me know!

[edit3:] Oh-oh-oh! Just saw that there will be some Bruce Nauman included in a new exhibit at the MoMA: Here is Every. Four Decades of Contemporary Art (9/10/08-3/23/09).

[edit2:] Oh, and in keeping with the art theme of this post. LOOK AT WHAT MORGAN DID! FUCKING STARRY NIGHT IN ICING ON CUPCAKES!

[edit4:] Also, van Gogh's Starry Night, coincidentally, will be on display at the MoMA from this Sunday until Monday, January 5th.

Everybody's doin' it~

Weekend recap? Saturday was cool-- a nice, lazy day at home. Haven't had that in forever! Morgan came over and we had a little sewing party. I didn't do much sewing other than making some fabric I picked up into curtains for my huge-ass window wall in my room. Sheer purple and blue. (OMG Sharon -- I just realized, PURPLE AND BLUE! I didn't even do it on purpose!) So they can still be seen-through, but I don't care since it gives my room color but the sunlight still gets through. I'll obviously have to change them to a heavier fabric for the winter, but that's still far enough away.

I still haven't posted any pics or talked much about the new place, though I absolutely love it here and was just thinking how awesome it is to have my own place. And this much fucking space! I was suddenly overcome with a feeling of *OMGSQUEE*; I promise to post pics soon.

Sunday was a cosplay event at Kinokuniya, which I did not really attend. It was way too crowded in there for me to tolerate, so I waited outside with Chris, Sean, AJ, Carrie and others. Judy and I met up with Kelly when she texted and went for dinner with a whole bunch of people. Dinner was pretty cool and Kelly, Judy and I rounded off the night with some drinking at the Tower bar. I got home way too late for a work night, but you know it was worth it. ^_~

Woke up super tired and ended up leaving my cell phone at home. I was pretty useless at work, though I did have a bit of a second wind at some point. But today Katie came down, so she, Kelly, Judy, Maryann and I went to have dinner. Liz and Juliet joined us for more drinking fun!

So Judy and I were on the train going home sometime around midnight. And the best part of that ride home was when THE BUM WHO WAS SLEEPING ON ONE OF THE 3-SEATERS UNZIPPED HIS PANTS AND PISSED ON THE FLOOR OF THE CAR. WITHOUT EVEN GETTING UP FROM HIS LAYING-DOWN POSITION. Yeah, I love New York. (I actually say that without sarcasm.) And I love New Yorkers, who took it in stride, other than a few of them moving a couple of seats away and making sure their legs were stretched out so that the stream of piss didn't hit their shoes.

Okay, sleep now. I'm tired. Boo. =(

The house that Jack built.

Today we went to have brunch with my mom's first cousin, once removed (which makes him our first cousin, twice removed, as he tells it). His name is Charles, he has a wife named Eunice, and they're both 80 years old. For all that, they're pretty cool. Last time we saw them was about 10 years ago. I was in 5th grade (so about 10 or 11) and my sister was just 3 or 4 years old; she hardly remembers them. I remember meeting them, but I don't remember anything of the day.

We took a few pictures; in this one, from left to right are: Liz, me, my father, Eunice, Charles.

We had a big brunch with them at their hotel (the Crowne Plaza by LaGuardia Airport), chatting all the while, and then we headed back home. They're world travelers -- I know they've been to at least 13 foreign countries -- but they live in Houston. Nice people. Of course, I probably wouldn't want to see them daily, but I'm pretty antisocial that way.

So they didn't have time to come back to the house, so our big cleaning was for nothing. (Well, not nothing precisely 'cause it looks nice and all, but...) And I figured I'd take a pic of the dining room and the kitchen while they were all nice and neat and it was sunny outside. You can see the green canopy over the back patio through the kitchen window, and the patio doors just behind the dining room table. Oh, and the random rolly office chair at the dining room table is for my father until he's feeling better. ^_~ We usually have the 6th matching chair there.

I suppose I should post up a few pics of my own room (featuring cels, and other anime art) for any busybodies who are interested. Make sure to take a look, otherwise they're just using up some of my website space for nothing.

Wall to the left of the window over my bed.
--- Mosquiton, Mosquiton, Sailor Neptune, Kaiou Michiru, Tsukino Usagi
Wall next to boiler room door, across from foot of my bed.
--- Detail of: Duo cel, Duo douga
Wall across from side of my bed, above desk.
--- laminated pics of Mana and Kozi from Malice Mizer given to me and Liz by Louie
Wall above desk to the left.

Wall to the right of the desk.
--- Hotohori, Shidou, Fujimiya Aya, Kudou Youji, Recca & Mikagami
Wall across from head of my bed/opposite boiler room.

Do you see what happens when you have too much time (and a digital camera) on your hands?! Ridiculous!

A desk, a desk!

The next day we woke up around 11:30, I think.

My parents wanted to go to Levitz to get a computer desk and a small couch/love-seat type thing for the computer room 'cause we've just been improvising for the last few months since we moved in. So we had a big fight/discussion first. (In my family, we can't talk without yelling, interrupting, petty sniping, etc.) Then we left about 2 hours later. We went to Levitz but didn't see anything good.

We went to Ikea and found a REALLY nice Computer desk, almost the exact measurements that we had estimated would be perfect for the room and our comfort. You can adjust the height of the desk (it was on display as a sort of sketch desk with a stool, like an architect would use, if you can picture it), and it comes with a shelf that you can put either above or below the desk, also adjustable. You can also buy - for an additional $10 -- a swivel shelf that attaches to the legs, as in, to put your printer, or whatever. We bought 2 of those. All for $150. A very good buy.

I'd also been wanting to get a desk for my room, which we ended up getting also. It's made by the same company as the computer desk. It's a table- no drawers underneath. Just what I wanted. It's quite long and about 2 and a half feet deep, so there's a lot of surface area. I also got the optional swivel shelf for the computer that'll be going in my room. =D Hopefully I'll start writing again with the computer there. I find it difficult to write anywhere but my bedroom, and on anything but a computer or laptop.

The hardest part was trying to decide between the birch wood desk top or the white lacquer top. My sister said birch. My mom said birch. My father said birch. I called Angelica at her grandmother's house; she said birch. I was thinking maybe the white. See, I hate wood. I really don't like it that much. After a while, I don't even see it anymore, so I can ignore it, but I really don't like wood. It's all warm and homey. Sooooo not me. But my hand-me-down bed is unfinished oak, and I have 2 bookcases on either side of my room that are a dark brown wood (dunno what it's called). Then there's a bookcase in the middle that used to be dark brown - prolly the same color - but we'd painted it black to match the stuff in our apartment. Now that we've moved it would've matched if it were still brown. Go figure. But anyway, I have wood paneling on the walls, but they're painted white. You see my dilemma? Get the birch wood and take a chance on it not matching the unfinished oak of my bed and ending up with too many colors for the room? (Oh, the carpet is this neutral-orangy color.) Or go with the white to blend into the walls and possibly look too cheap? I ended up getting the birch. Why? Well, it's a stupid reason, but I know myself well enough that it's completely true. If I got the white and I didn't like it, then I'd have only myself to blame and I'd feel worse than if I got the birch and didn't like it, but could blame it on everyone else. =D Besides, after a while, I just don't notice how it looks anymore, anyway. (But don't worry - the birch actually looks okay. Even if it doesn't exactly match the unfinished oak, and I think there are way too many colors in my room.) I also have black sheets, and grey sheets, a tan blanket (which kind of matches the carpet) and a black comforter reversible to oatmeal.

My room is horribly uncoordinated. And yet, I'm really good with colors. It's too bad I don't have enough money to just get what I want no matter what the cost. Then it'd be really nice. My dream room: black and silver/grey with accents of red or blue. I'm pretty much a dark/primary color person… no pastels, please. =D

OMG, have I mentioned my pink bathroom? It's hideous. It was like that when we moved in, but it's all tile so I can't paint it over. Otherwise, I was thinking of a nice teal color. Well, it's not really hideous, I mean, it's okay, but…. It's pink. Yuck.

We also got some nice throw pillows for only $5 each. Three navy blue and three light blue for the living room, and 2 lime green for my sister's bedroom to match her one lime green wall (the other walls are white). It's cool. Nice match. They didn't have any black, otherwise I'd have gotten a few for myself.
