Anime Boston con report: Friday

For all of Thursday afternoon and into the night, we all kept commenting to each other that it didn't feel like a con 'cause we were hanging out and having fun doing non-con things (and no, I don't mean nonconsensual). Well, although we were in costume for most of Friday, it still didn't really feel like one of our typical cons to me. Which was definitely not a bad thing. It was the start of some very good things. ^_~

Angelica and I were the last ones to roll out of bed around 10am. The others had been up for varying amounts of time before us, doing various things. Did I mention that Antoine had come to a sold-out con (all pre-regged) without a pre-reg, hoping to get in? Angelica suggested that Yoshi (although it turned out to be Maryann) go to the con people in the morning, say they lost the badge outside Thursday night and purchase another 3-day registration. If they said yes, Maryann would have her badge and Antoine would pay for the new one. If they said no, she could just "find" it later. Well, it all worked out (more's the pity?) for Antoine. And they were pretty diligent about checking badges at this con, so unlike something like Otakon, where you can still do stuff without getting your badge checked (like watch videos, etc.), one wouldn't have been able to do anything at this con without a badge.

Before we woke up, Liz and Maryann found out from a local that there was a mall a short train-ride away. (Background info: Maryann still needed a green tanktop to complete her Heero Yuy costume for our Gundam Wing cosplay the next day.) So we bought a token ($1.25 each, isn't it amazing? I remember when the MTA fare used to be $1.25, back in the day) and rode the train underground bus on tracks (see pics below) to the mall. Which was sort of like stepping through a time warp because if you've ever been to Roosevelt Field (or chances are, any mall in your area), it looked the same. We went into Sears and came out with a $7 green tank top (in the perfect green, too)... and did you know, Massachusetts has no sales tax? Lucky fuckers. I hate (most) republicans. I hate Bloomberg.

the tracks are only inches below the platform -- too weird!
casual schu & nagi came along for the ride
brad was mad that we didn't let him finish doing his hair & getting into his suit

Anyway. We came back to the room and finished getting into our Schwarz (from Weiß Kreuz) outfits, and then went to the dealer's room! Oddly enough, it was in a separate place, about a block down from the hotel, but I think it worked out pretty well for all that. Especially because the weather was nice. It would've been pretty crappy, though, if the weather had turned cold (or rainy, which had been a possibility that weekend).

schu modifies who's next on the kill list
farfie takes care of his weapons, washing away blood, of course

After the dealer's room (from which Angelica and I came out with awesome heretic Bahamut figures for only $20), we went back to the room for a while. Then headed over to the Sailor Moon panel, followed by the cosplay panel (both of which were excellently entertaining), followed by the FFX-2 panel (which was headed by a threesome of immature teenage girls "we only got this panel because she turned 18 in time" who were obnoxiously opinionated and had no idea of what they were talking about, much less an inkling of an idea on how to conduct an interesting panel or simple discussion -- what they really wanted was an audience to be able to voice their opinions to). We left that one after a few minutes because they were just too obnoxious to stand, most especially the just-turned-18-year old.

But that took us pretty late into the evening, I think, and I know we went to the game room sometime after that. The game room. Where I would spend much of my time after this. They had. an. arcade. ddr. machine. How awesome is that? No thin, slippery & slidey soft pads. They had the real shit! And it was free, omg! And I was doubly impressed that the soft pads they did have were the thick, quality versions that did not move around when you're jumping on them! My renewed interest in DDR was fierce and since I got Maryann and Yoshi to play with me a few times, lots of fun. At one point, we all went back to the room to change out of our Schwarz costumes, and I scurried back to the game room so I could get a little more DDR in before they closed (11:30pm -- way too early). Maryann said she'd play with me, and while I was waiting on line, she went to take a picture of someone who was dressed up as Chipp from Guilty Gear X. Apparently, he was with a few others playing hack, and they asked her to join. She joined in for a bit, but came back to play DDR with me... but they'd invited her to play later, so she said she'd be back.

I can't remember what we did after that... oh! I remember, we went to Bennigan's, an Irish-themed Uno's/Applebee's-like place. I got some horribly-unhealthy-but-extremely-delicious Monte Cristo sandwich, that was more like a ham, turkey & cheese zeppole -- with a raspberry dipping sauce -- than anything else. Of course, I only ate about a quarter of it, so I took the rest back to the room for the next morning. And I got a Midori Sour (1 part Midori, 2 parts sour mix), which is going to be one of my favorite drinks (if not very alcoholic), Angelica says it tastes like a Jolly Rancher candy. I agree; I love those (watermelon is my favorite)!

When we got back (around 1-1:30am), Maryann left to go play hack. And it seemed like everyone else was pretty much getting ready for bed. Well, I was still pretty full of energy and looking for something to do, so I was thinking I might go to the J-rock panel where they'd be playing the Merveilles concert (even though I've seen it at least 6 times already), but when I got downstairs, I decided to see what Maryann was up to. I radioed her and discovered she was in one of the large meeting rooms playing hack with a bunch of guys. (She's a slick one, I tell you.) So I went inside and sat down and watched. Sounds boring, but it was a lot of fun, and when they sat down to take a break, I talked with them and stuff. They seemed like nice guys... some a bit weird, but nice all the same. I found out later that Alex had been the black chocobo playing the guitar at last year's Otakon cosplay event (and that I had a picture of him at home on the computer).

So we stayed there until about 5am, when everyone went back to their rooms. I didn't have my camera with me (dammit!), so I didn't get any pics of that time (which would've been really nice 'cause it was inside and the lighting was good). Maryann said she was really glad I came down, so that made me really happy 'cause I had a lot of fun too. ^^;
