Otakon 2008: Hang-out con?

While this wasn't my most favorite Otakon, it was pretty darn enjoyable. Cosplay this year was much more relaxed, and while I missed the energy and chaos of our more eye-catching cosplay, I also enjoyed feeling like I could change out of costume earlier than I normally would. It certainly allowed me more time to just hang out with everyone this year. Yeah, it seemed like this year was hang-out con. Not that I don't hang out every year, but it was certainly more concentrated this year.

THURSDAY
Stayed up from Wednesday at 7:30am to go to work, then came home to work on cosplay all night (with no sleep whatsoever), until my 2 hour nap on the greyhound at around 10am. Up for over 24hrs! We arrived at the hotel, checked in and waited around for the rest of our party to arrive to eat together. Which was nice, and unfortunately, the only day we ended up eating ALL together for the rest of the con. =( Instead of standing in line for pre-reg badge pick-up we hung out in the room (finishing up details on our costumes and just shootin' the breeze), then had dinner and then went to pick up badges. The line was really quick at that point (9pm). Got back to the room and worked on cosplay some more until not being able to stay up any longer around 1am. Which isn't surprising considering I only had those 2 hours on the bus where I actually slept.

FRIDAY
Unfortunately, the press badge thing fell through for me so I had to go stand on the regular registration line at 5am on Friday morning to buy a badge. Which, I suppose, I don't really regret. Because even though I had only 4 or so hours of sleep, I had a fun time standing on line, chatting with Will (who also didn't pre-reg) and the people in front of us. They were a riot -- 5 of them from Illinois and Iowa, including an 18-year old virgin they were determined to get laid. Haha. I ran into them on Saturday night when we were all hanging out by the fountain and seems like they were not successful. Too bad for him.

Got back to the room at around 9:30am and people were just starting to get up and get ready. It took us a while, but we eventually made it to the con. We missed entering the hall costume contest, which is too bad, but maybe next year. Walked around, took pics, the usual. Had a nice little photoshoot with Anna at the outdoor fountain near the harbor. Zoltan and Jon arrived at some point Friday night and we all went out for dinner to a really good Indian/Nepalese restaurant. If you actually walk away from the BCC, there's actually a lot of stuff around! LOL, 9 years of going to Otakon and I'm just discovering this now! >_<;

After dinner we came back to the con and found Katie and Kelly and hung out with them. (Note for future laughs: Kelly's "which boyfriend?" comment really cracked me up!) Ran into Alex in the game room at one point. Met [livejournal.com profile] chienverde who is cool people for lending me her beret for some silly pics -- and who lives in freaking Flushing! I'm meeting all these people now who live in Queens! Craziness!

And around 2am, when they kicked us out of the convention center, we moved over to the front of the registration area. At some point I took out my hackey sack and a circle began. It was OMG SO MUCH FUN! Eventually all the other girls (Juliet, Liz, Judy) left and I was the lone girl, which isn't exactly unusual for a hack circle. But there were some cool guys there (the guy with the fedora, the asian guy, the ninja guy, and that hispanic bleach cosplayer) that I ran into later during the con and hope to see again next year. FUN TIMES!

So I'd been up 24 hours -- from getting up at Friday morning to stand on line at 5am until finally deciding I should go back to the room a little after 4:30am. (Do you see a trend here?) Will probably would have stayed out longer, but I took pity on Zoltan and Jon who seemed to want to go.

SATURDAY
Got up late and got into costume, and then to the con. Did some walking around, taking pics, shoots, etc. More of the same. We got out of costume after having a late lunch -- something around 5pm or so? Then went to hit up the liquor store again and locate Katie & Kelly for more drunken fun. Hijinks were had with red paint and nerf guns (and DAMMIT CHRIS -- I've never used them before, how am I supposed to know you have to cock the hammer every time you shoot? =P) in Chris's room and then by the fountain again. Met [livejournal.com profile] bobbarker who is also cool people and who has completely and utterly convinced me that I should be going to Dragon*Con next year. And in my not-all-that-drunken-ness, I set myself a reminder to book a room for next year...

Zoltan, Jon and I left for an hour and a half, apparently (it did NOT feel like that much time had passed) and eventually we met up with the group again outside the BCC -- just when Maryann and Judy were heading back toward the room. What time was it? Like 2:30am? We continued to hang out with Katie & Kelly until close to 4am again. I don't remember a whole lot of that part, though I do know that Liz and Juliet were quite amusing and Jon was not making much sense at all.

KATIE & KELLY! GUYS! I was just thinking we should really hang out again and I mentioned as much to Judy and then she reminded me that you'd be coming down for NYAF! Awesome! =D Are you guys staying with us?

SUNDAY
Day of relaxation~! No costume, though I'd meant to put on the white contacts Liz used for Hinata, but I totally forgot. Finally went to the dealer's room and browsed for an hour. This is the very first Otakon where I did not buy a thing, literally, from the dealer's room or the artist alley/art show. It's pretty shocking. I did place a bid or two in the art show, but didn't win anything. Overall, it's probably better that way as I don't have much money right now. But yeah. Weird.

I did run into Sharon in the dealer's room on Sunday, so it was nice to be able to say hi/bye before the end of the con. Also, Will ran into those guys from the hack circle again on Sunday afternoon and I moseyed over, so was able to say hi again before the end of the con. Whaaa~! I wanna play hack more~!

So we got on the 4:30 bus back to NYC, but it was one of the ones going through Delaware, so we got back to Port Authority at 10:30pm anyway. Though that's still a bit earlier than usual.

All in all, an excellent weekend of hanging out. Not so much for cosplay, though I did enjoy our cosplay thoroughly. I think we all looked very good, actually. Next year I'd like to go back to video game cosplay, though.

More pics of us from Refractor Productions can be found here. Just scroll to the bottom of the page and you can see our set. Haha, in the close-up one, you can kind of see my tattoo inside my kimono. ^^;

PIC SPAM NEXT POST! YAYE~!
