It's really fucking unfair: more hospital visits.

My mom tripped over an uneven grate about half a block away from work this morning. She fell onto her shoulder and, after an excrutiatingly painful ride to the hosptial in an ambulance, and several hours later, we were informed that she had dislocated her shoulder, fractured the ball of her shoulder, and broken the upper arm (humerus) bone -- all the way through. They tried to manually push the bone back into the correct spot, but it didn't work.

She was in horrible pain all day long as she can barely move without jarring her shoulder -- got 4 doses of morphine over an 8 hour period...

She's in the hospital tonight and scheduled for surgery in the morning to have pins and plates put in to put the bones back into their correct spots, and to hold them together.

...and did I forget to mention that while we were in the ambulance we were cut off so the driver had to slam on the brakes, throwing us all forward? Which caused her to scream in agony as the EMTs aren't allowed to give painkillers in the field? I was seatbelted in, so I was fine. But the other EMT who was sitting next to me, writing up his report actually got thrown off the bench into the cabinet?

I feel soooo bad -- this is one of those things that you just can't predict will happen, which causes you to go into those "if ONLY I'd gone to work earlier", "if only I'd gone down the other block" sort of spirals.

And I'm just relieved that she's feeling a bit better (some of the pressure is off her arm since they splinted it, I believe). I hope after-surgery and the next couple weeks are not going to be too painful for her -- I know we're all going to be stressed and stretched to our limits here at home.

Oh man! I hope she's going to be fine. And right until I read this I was all excited to tell you that I'm going to be in Queens tomorrow for a safety course on scaffolding. Now I'm all sad and guilty because I don't know my way around by PT and I don't think I could even bring a card and flowers for your momma. Please tell her I'll be hoping for her swift recovery. I'll call you when I'm out of class, I hope I get you.

PS, feel better, cuz I know you, Elizabeth and your daddoo must be sad too.

Wow, that's awful. And dislocations hurt like an SOB; they're even worse than a break a lot of times. And she had both. >_< I wish her luck on her surgery tomorrow.

Your poor mom! I'm so sorry for her. I hope her surgery goes well, and that she mends quickly, with as little pain as possible.

Dude I'm so sorry to hear that! I hope she gets better, I know shoulder injuries can be nasty and linger though.. ::hugs and well wishes::

I hope she'll be feeling better soon and that the recovery period will be quick. 0_0 Maybe you can make some soup for her at the hospital?

I can't imagine what it must feel like to have that much damage in one place. But I do agree that since it is her left arm, hopefully, she won't have to stress as much as if it were the other. That's prob'ly what sparked the dream I had last night. That your mom was back home from surgery (she had no sling or cast or anything) But she was pissed off from the pain and cursing after every other word as she came down the stairs~ oh and it was night time, wonder if that means anything

Yeah I broke it on a bone once and twice on a cartilage growth plate XP All of 'em took about a months time at least in a cast with some tender care in ace bandages afterwards ::nodnod:: But I dunno, your mom's case sounds so much more severe than that, she'll probably be laid up for six weeks or so as that tends to be the general healing time.

Much luv n luck!
